It wasn't my choice, but, as with many of the book club books, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The whole time I was reading it I was regaling my family members with information from it. Such fun. Well written and a quick read - very readable for a somewhat scholarly book. A bit of linguistics and a bit of psychology, packed with interesting tidbits about taboo language. Very much worth reading....more

I'm on Chapter 4 and, so far, it's fascinating.

Excellent book, well worth reading. It might not be an ideal audiobook, because there are quite a few characters with foreign names and I have to admit, I had a hard time keeping them sorted out. But that's a minor complaint (and probably more the fault of my aging brain than any inherent problem with the book). ...more

A great read! (I bored many friends and relatives with details of this book while I was reading it - they are no doubt glad to know I'm finished, and will be moving on to something else!)
I learned tons a fascinating things, and it's written in such a lively style that it doesn't feel at all like a history lesson. In fact, it could have been (excuse the expression) quite a dry book, but there's just enough information to be educational without being labored or feeling like a lecture.
The whole book is super interesting, but it may be worth reading solely for the epilogue, about a 7th very important beverage that will shape our lives well into the future....more

UPDATE
The first chapter was surprisingly dull, but the reviews on this site are so strong, I feel I must persevere.
UPDATE
It gets a lot more interesting. And, bonus, the time period is the same as the other book I'm reading, The Alienist (late 19th century), and Teddy Roosevelt figures prominently in both - fun to get totally different perspectives on this towering persona.
FURTHER UPDATE
I feel sort of bad, but I'm getting sick of this. It's not bad, but there's SO much detail, just too much - I find myself drifting while I listen. I'm putting it aside for now. ...more
