What I also enjoyed are the descriptions of settings especially in the opening when Francesca and her sister and fellow travelers are coming over. They suffered greatly to get to America. Alma s family and the German beer house came alive Thid is a.novel of two memorable women and the conflicts they strive to overcome more than a story of Ellis Island and in that respect a very good read. I especially loved Alma,s storyline of becoming an interpreter. ...more

Author does a good job of sustaining main character Jake:s struggle as a writer and his subsequent struggle over being exposed concrrning his novel's origins. Interesting means of bringing in the abtagonist/love interest although I wondered about her from the outset. Subtle hints at first as to her motives but as she questioned Jake's journeys to discover Evans family, you k new something was up with her. A good weekend read....more

Davis is a good storyteller and one of the best in creating strong characters. . No exception here. Rory, Soline and Camilla all shine as the leading ladies who hold the readers attention. Enjoyable although I felt the ending was rushed esp. After the suspense about Anson . Nevertheless , for this reader an engaging story and hard to put down. Another page turner from a wonderful women's author....more

I feel like I know all if them. Jane, Evan, Otis, Sophie hector and Annunciata are all memorable. . I liked the weaving of Beatrice' story into main plot. Added to mystery. Even more engaging is the authors use of setting. She uses description to utmost advantage and we feel like we are there. Beautiful and sometimes chilling description. Jane's back and forth with love story adds to conflict but this reader pulled for Evan throughout Many thanks to Amazons First Read for another winner of a read....more

Readers of Sweet Jane, Joanne Easley’s debut novel, will be equally pleased with her second novel Just One Look. Set in 1960’s and 1970’s Chicago, we follow Dani Marek as she finds true love with her teen sweetheart, John. He is one of the many casualties of the Viet Nam War leaving her heartbroken and floundering through life. For the next few years, she frequents Chicago bars and nightclubs and has meaningless encounters with other men. She enters into a marriage doomed from the start, her life salvaged by the birth of her daughter, Lorelei. Enhanced by music form the 60’s and 70’s, fashion, and Chicago culture, I was quickly drawn in to the main character’s story along with her mother, and sister, Paige, all interesting characters. Just One Look hooks the reader from the first pages and doesn’t let go, giving the reader a beautiful story of love and redemption. Easley demonstrates her writing skills once again by giving us characters we encounter in the beginning of the story and want to know more about. An excellent read. I received an advance copy for an honest review. ...more

Kate has been abandoned by him and hopes to reunite for the sake of the extremely successful company they have built together. Tish is portrayed as the money grabbing next wife whose only pastime is shopping and truly believes she can be best friends with John's daughter. John dies early on in the novel and this sets off a fight over control among the wives and the daughter. I didn't think in the beginning of the book I would be drawn in; however, keep reading. This can become a page turner if the reader buys into the idea that maybe Tish killed John, that maybe Kate will maintain ownership of the company, and that the whole escapade can be settled reasonably. It's not exactly a fun read; it is more of an who's going to win here. Complicated by the fact you really can't pull for wither woman. Tish pulls the short straw because she relies on this despicable Kentucky lawyer, Uncle George. By the time it's all over, you're glad it is. Still an enjoyable read....more
