You have to be happy with what you achieved. 2/ Every goal has a limit. It's only perfection that is limitless. 3/ It is pointless to share your dream with others who do not share the same dream. They will never be able to visualize what you are able to visualize from your position. 4/ The only true love is the one which leads to freedom. 5/ It's difficult to convince e people that they can be free with practice and dedication. 6/ Behind all the hatred, jealousy or evil, there lies pure and sacred beings. With practice, we must learn how to see that pure being. 7/ We don't need much help from outside if we keep finding ourselves a little more each day and approach the infinite within us. That infinite is our instructor, our torch bearer. 8/ Don't believe what your eyes are telling you. All they show is limitation. Look with your understanding. In The Hidden Life of Trees, Peter Wohlleben shares his deep love of woods and forests and explains the amazing processes of life, death, and regeneration he has observed in the woodland and the amazing scientific processes behind the wonders of which we are blissfully unaware. Much like human families, tree parents live together with their children, communicate with them, and support them as they grow, sharing nutrients with those who are sick or struggling and creating an ecosystem that mitigates the impact of extremes of heat and cold for the whole group. As a result of such interactions, trees in a family or community are protected and can live to be very old. In contrast, solitary trees, like street kids, have a tough time of it and in most cases die much earlier than those in a group. After having read the book page by page, I, hereby, list down 28 humbling lessons from this awesome book. These are the examples that stuck with me. These learnings are worded and appended in a way that makes it easier for most of us to understand and absorb. Here you go... 1/ Most trees of the same species growing in the same stand are connected to each other through their root systems. Nutrient exchange and helping neighbors in time of need is the rule. Forests, therefore, are super organisms with interconnections, much like ant colonies. 2/ A single tree is at the mercy of nature. But together, many trees can create an ecosystem that ensures saner environment, humidity and water at all times. In this protected environment, trees can live to be very old. 3/ Trees use scent as a mode of communication. Humans also possess a secret language of scent. 4/ Other than scent, they also possess a sense of taste, and can also communicate via roots to defend themselves against specific attacks by pests. 5/ A lot of nature independent communication among trees happen via a network of fungus attached to their root tips. 6/ Trees face competition when growing together, but that's true only for the trees of different species. Trees of the same species work as a team (through fungi in their roots) and support each other when growing together. 7/ In a jungle, out of the million flowers that bloom, hardly 1 to 2 trees finally become big enough to survive for 100+ years. Rest are eaten up by pests, and animals. 8/ A mature tree can send 130 gallons of water traversing through its branches and leaves in a single day. Water is essential for photosynthesis. But it cannot afford to find so much moisture every day in summers. Thus, it stockpiles water in winter. They learn how to conserve water and not be lavish about its use during abundance. 9/ When trees are really thirsty, they begin to scream, of course, in ultrasonic waves which humans are not capable of hearing. These waves are created via vibration of trunks. 10/ Trees collaborate with specific underground fungus to increase the reach of their roots for fetching water. Fungus also protects the tree roots from harmful attacks by other pests and fungi, and also some harmful minerals. In turn, they have to provide food to the fungus. 11/ Trees shed and generate new skin, much like humans. As trees age, wrinkles start to appear in their skin, starting from bottom. 12/ Old trees nurture and fertilize the ground for their young ones by taking help of moss which grows only on old trees. 13/ Trees, like animals, have brains, can think, decide and act. The brain is spread across the roots. It's just that it's not as fast as animals. 14/ There are more life forms in a handful of forest soil than the number of humans on this planet. More than 50 % of the forest bio mass is below the soil. A teaspoon of forest soil has many miles of fungal filaments which work and transform the soil to make it usable by the trees. 15/ A tree, through its course of life, stores about 22 tons of CO2 in its trunk, branches and roots. A part of it gets released when the tree dies but a majority is held up in the forest. 16/ But for transpiration from trees and the chain of trees from oceans until the middle of land, there would have been no rains ever in land areas just a few miles beyond the coast. Trees form a chain and move clouds from sea to the middle of land with the help of wind, of course. 17/ Trees don't allow harsh rain drops to hit the ground directly. Instead, they take the blow and feed the ground slowly so that the water doesn't run away as a stream but is slowly absorbed by the ground. 18/ Trees support a vast ecosystem even within themselves - owls, woodpeckers, beetles, ants, squirrels, fungi and the list goes on. Even the dead tree trunk go on to serve the forest ecosystem. 19/ At the top of a typical single forest tree are around 2000+ animals belonging to 250+ different species. There is a different world that each tree holds. 20/ Trees hibernate in winters by shedding leaves and going off to sleep for a few months. This shedding also aids facing storms, and helps the young ones down below get some sunlight. 21/ Trees have their own character. They behave differently in the same environmental conditions. Three trees, growing together, hibernate at different times displaying that they have their own character. 22/ Trees release anti bacterial compounds in the air. The air under a walnut tree is always devoid of mosquitoes because of the compound releases by its leaves. Thus, in a forest, the air is the cleanest and purest. 23/ The upper side of the leaf is primarily for photosynthesis while lower side of the leaf is breathing. However, some species can photosynthesize from both the sides. 24/ Trees move with the help of their seeds and depending on the climate change. If the earth is becoming warmer, trees tend to move towards the north and vice versa. 25/ When rain and lightning strikes the trees that are smooth, the smooth trees create a layer of water around their trunk. In such a case, lightening travels to the ground without impacting the tree. In case the tree outer is rough or in some trees when the water does not form a continuous string. the impact of lightning is much worse. 26/ Tree leaves clean up so much from the air, like pollution dust etc. They also absorb a lot of pollen and dust which comes up from the ground. So, the air under the trees is one of the cleanest air you can breathe on this planet. 27/ Everyday a tree releases about 29 tons of oxygen into the air per square mile of forest. An average human breathes in nearly 2 pounds of oxygen a day. This means that a tree produces a daily requirement of about 10,000 people. Every walk in the forest is like taking a shower in oxygen but only during the day. During the night, trees do not photosynthesize and they produce carbon dioxide. 28/ Trees need sleep much as the humans do. When we exposed trees to artificial light during the night, then they are more likely to die early. They need complete rest during the night. This is a 2018 book by Swedish physician, professor of international health and statistician Hans Rosling. In the book, Rosling suggests that the vast majority of people are wrong about the state of the world. He shatters many myths that we carry about the world around us. After having read the book page by page, I, hereby, list down 35 fabulous lessons from this awesome book. These are the examples that stuck with me. I know that I need to keep practicing this learning day in and day out. These learning are worded and appended in a way that makes it easier for most of us to understand and absorb. For now, if you wish to know about 'Factfulness', and what I learned from it, here you go... 1/ Most people think that the world today is more frightening, more violent and more hopeless than it really is. In fact, the reality is dramatically opposite. We are living in one of the most peaceful times with better healthcare and technology, and least number of people in dire poverty. 2/ Its not just that the people are ignorant, it is realized that they were possessing actively wrong knowledge. 3/ Illusions do not happen in our eyes. They happen in our brains. So, the misconceptions we carry are not because of what we see but what we believe. 4/ Our quick thinking brains are craving for drama. These dramatic instincts are causing misconceptions and an overdramatic worldview. The dramatic intake needs to be controlled to get a realistic view of the world. 5/ There is not even one country in the world where child mortality rate has not come down over the last 30 years - a clear indication that we have improved as a whole to protect the health of young ones. 6/ While the world has changed for the better, the world view has not kept pace. 7/ These misconceptions exist because of the fact that human beings have a strong dramatic instinct towards binary thinking, a basic instinct to divide things into two distinct groups, with no gap in between. Humans, love to dichotomize. Good vs bad, heroes vs villains, my country vs the rest, me vs the society, and as in cricket terms, defense vs aggression. The list goes on and on. 8/ Dividing the world into two distinct divides is simple and intuitive, and also dramatic because it implies conflict – and human mind loves drama. We do this without thinking, most of the time. 9/ This gap instinct makes us imagine division where there is actually just a smooth range. 10/ The world is not “developing” vs “developed”. Between these two extremes is a vast range of countries who have moved away from developing and are not yet developed. Majority of the world today lies in this vast range, while “developing” and “developed” are two extremes. 11/ Hans goes on to create 4 levels to give a better picture of the world – Level 1 to Level 4. Level 1 is extreme poverty and Level 4 is a group of rich people. But the sweetest spot is somewhere in between these two levels where more than 85% of the worlds population reside. 12/ Any simplification of information may also be misleading, and averages are no exception. Averages can mislead by hiding a spread in a single number, especially when we compare two averages. 13/ In just 20 years, world population living in extreme poverty has dropped from 29% to 9%. 14/ Back in 1800, life expectancy was roughly 30 years anywhere in the world. That was what it had been throughout history. Don't get confused with averages. This doesn't mean that most people lived only unto 30s. It actually means that half of the deaths happened in the age group 0 to 5, and other half in the group 60 to 70. The average was thus 30. Remember that there is always a spread in averages and understanding the spread is very important. The average life expectancy today is close to 74. We, humans, have always struggled to make our families survive, and finally, we are succeeding. Time to celebrate. 15/ The misconception that the world is getting worse is very difficult to maintain if we look at the present in a historical context. 16/ The goal of higher income is not just bigger piles of money. The goal of longer lives is not just extra time. The ultimate goal is to have the freedom to do what we want. Culture, and freedom - The ultimate goals of development, can be hard to measure, but guitars per capita is a good proxy. [Recommended Read: From the Rat Race to Financial Freedom] 17/ The world is still bad. There are many serious issues to be tackled, but it's also getting better at the same time. It's bad and better. 18/ Human mind craves for drama, and media exploits this by sensationalizing bad news. Negative and positive changes are happening simultaneously in the world. Negative changes will find you via media. But for positive changes, you will have to go and find them. 19/ There is no room for facts when our minds are occupied by fear. 20/ Sum total of all fearful deaths (natural disasters, plane crashes, murders, nuclear leaks and terrorism) is less than 1% of total deaths happening each year. Still these events get enormous media attention. Not that we don't need to work on these areas, but perhaps a higher focus is needed somewhere else. 21/ In the deepest poverty, you should never do anything perfectly. If you do, you are stealing resources from where they can be better used. 22/ The world cannot be understood without numbers, and it cannot be understood with numbers alone. Though we absolutely need numbers to understand the world, we should be highly skeptical about conclusions derived from purely number crunching. 23/ One number, however big or small it may seem, can never be meaningful unless compared with something meaningful 24/ Single, standalone numbers are far less meaningful than when they are seen as rates. E.g. no. of child deaths does not give ad clear picture as child deaths per new born.(infant mortality rate). [Recommended Read: FOOPS!] 25/ Categorization is natural and important for us to function well. But, unfortunately, it can make us jump to conclusions about the whole category based on just a few, or even one, unusual example. This creates generalizations and stereotypes which are mind blockers for all kind of understanding. 26/ Majority is also a category. Majority doesn't mean All or Almost all. It could be 51% or 99% - a big difference. Go deep into data to understand the situation better. [Recommended Read: FOOPS!] 27/ Cultures, religion, nations and people are not rocks. They change. They transform - constantly. No specific culture or value can be labeled for a specific religion, or group or country since it is ever evolving for all of us. Never dismiss slow change for no change. 28/ Experts are experts but only in their fields. Outside it, they could be just average or even worse. However, they don't think so. 29/ Blaming media for misinformation is futile, because they are no better than ordinary population regarding the state of the world and where it is headed. 30/ In a tragedy, we have an instinct to find someone to blame, and rarely look in the mirror. 31/ It's usually unfair to credit or discredit one person or situation for a massive result. There are various known and unknown factors involved. [Recommended Read: A Father's Diary] 32/ Look at the systems, not people, when things go wrong. Look for causes, not villains. Similarly, in success, look for systems, not heroes. 33/ Our ability to think analytically takes a back seat when we are under time pressure, are afraid and thinking worst case scenarios. The need to act quickly only results in an even worse situation. That's the urgency instinct for you. Now or never is rarely true. Take your time. When people ask you to act immediately or repent, they are most likely resisting me to think clearly. [Recommended Read: Autobiography of A Stock] 34/ When you are called to action, sometimes the most useful action is to improve the data. 35/ When someone threatens to kill you, don't turn your back and try to run away. This awesome book 'The Power of Habit' explores the science behind habit creation and reformation. The book reached the best seller list for The New York Times, Amazon.com, and USA Today. It was long listed for the Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award. After having read the book page by page, I, hereby, list down 20 powerful lessons from this awesome book. These are the examples that stuck with me. I know that I need to keep practicing this learning day in and day out. These learning are worded and appended in a way that makes it easier for most of us to understand and absorb. 1/ Habits are certain shortcuts that emerge in our brains - because the brain is constantly looking for ways to save effort. Once the short cut is created, then the actions happen automatically. 2/ Habits are triggered whenever a chunk of behaviour starts or ends. During the first phase, there is a trigger or a cue that tells the brain to move into habit mode and also specifies which habit to use. The second phase is routine - where everything happens automatically. Then there is the third phase of reward which tells the brain whether the habit is worth remembering for the future. Over time, the phases become more and more automated. 3/ It is the craving that drives the habit loop - cue, routine and reward. 4/ Once habits are formed, its tough to stop executing them. The mind craves for the habit and its associated reward. 5/ To speed up our habit creation, we need a cue, a routine, a reward (all a part of the habit loop) ,and additionally, a craving for the reward. e.g. to quickly create a habit for morning walk, have a cue (get up with sport shoes by the side of the bed, think about the reward (a lavish breakfast) and keep thinking about the reward, till it creates enough craving, and then follow the process. 6/ Habits never go off, but they can be changed. The rule to change an existing habit is to keep the same cue and the same reward, and change the routine. 7/ It was observed that the addicts who practiced the techniques of habit replacement as per the above philosophy stayed with the new habits, but only until a stressful event occurred in their lives, at which point most start to go back to their addiction - no matter how much they had practiced. However, those addicts who had, by this time, started to have belief in God or in themselves, could scrape through this stressful time. It wasn't precisely God, but belief itself that made the difference. Belief is what made the new habit loop absolutely permanent. 8/ Massive transformations happen in people's life when they are faced with adversity. An equal transformation can also happen when people are associated with the right social groups. Both play a vital role in upping our belief levels. 9/ Belief is easier when it occurs within a community - when people come together to help each other. 10/ There are certain keystone habits that help us establish many other habits. In real life, as an example, eating dinner with family, making your bed in the morning, going for a regular walk or exercise - these are "small wins". Once these are established as habits, they start influencing our mood, and many other habits and causes major shifts in our life. 11/ Small Wins do not have a small impact. They bring you in the habit of winning. They may not have a linear or direct relationship with your goal, but they can change your mindset to a winning mindset which is quite likely yo have a positive impact on your goal. 12/ Just writing a daily journal of the food we eat is a keystone habit, that can play in our mind to change the way we think about food, nutrition and what we should be eating. A real experiment showed that those who kept a daily journal lost twice the weight than those who did not. Same goes with tracking your expenses every day. Just the act of daily tracking is good enough to control your expenses. 13/ Willpower is the single most important keystone habit for individual success. As an example, it has been proven that self discipline (a thread of willpower keystone habit) has the biggest effect on academic performance, much higher than even intellectual talent. 14/ Willpower is not just a skill. If it was a skill, it should stay nearly the same through the day. Willpower is like a muscle, just like the muscles in your arms or legs. It gets tired as it works harder - so there is less power left as the day progresses and you use this power in various activities. That's a strong reason to justify that maximum family issues occur during the evening or night with the partners losing patience, when the willpower has mostly been consumed in the day. 15/ Once willpower becomes stronger (doesn't matter how - through regular walking, studying, financial budgeting, gyming etc.), it starts to positively impact every other field. 16/ People want to be in control of their lives. Giving employees more power to take decisions improves their self discipline enormously, rather than giving them specific set of instructions to follow the process. 17/ In most organizations, there is always a delicate balance between all departments, each head trying to defend and nurture their own departments. But in extreme cases, it should be clear that which department, or person, goal needs to take ownership and overshadow everyone else. 18/ A company with dysfunction habits cannot turn around just because a leader orders it. Wise executives seek out moment of crisis - or create the perception of crisis, which cultivates the sense among everyone that something must change. The crisis time should never be wasted. Its an opportunity when everyone is open to change. That's the time to hit the hammer. 19/ The behaviors that occur unthinkingly are the evidence of our truest selves. And these behaviors are an outcome of automated habits. 20/ With practice and patience, and going through the habit loop, any habit can be changed. Life is hard and sometimes there is very little we can do to affect the outcome of the day. Sometimes the simple act of making our bed can give us the lift we need to start our day. Making a bed is a 'small-win' which triggers much bigger wins as we move along the day. 2/ None of us, however strong we may think we are - physically or mentally - are immune from life's tragic moments. It takes a team of good people to get you to your destination in life. You cannot paddle the boat alone. You will burn yourself out. Find someone to share your life with. Make as many friends as you possibly can. Your success depends on others - always. 3/ Determination and grit were always more important than talent. Measure a person by the size of their heart. 4/ Life is not supposed to be fair all the time. The sooner we learn this, the better for us. It is easy to stop trying because you believe that fate is against you. Great people are defined by how they deal with life's unfairness. Even after the best of your attempts, you will fail many times. Don't complain. Don't blame anyone. Stand tall, look ahead, and drive on. 5/ In life, you will face many challenges and pay for your failures. But if you persevere and if you let the failures teach you and strengthen you, then you will be prepared to handle life's toughest situations. 6/ You may fall short of being the best, but never ever fall short of giving your best. 7/ No one is immune from mistakes. True leaders must learn from these mistakes, use these mistakes to motivate themselves to become better, and not be afraid to try again and make the next tough decision. 8/ Those who live in the fear of failure or embarrassment will never see their full potential. Without pushing our limits, we would never know what is possible in life. 9/ Courage is a remarkable quality. Without courage, others define our path forward in life. Without it, the bullies of the world rise up. 10/ At some point, we will all confront a dark moment in life, which crushes our spirit and leaves us wondering about our future. In that dark moment, reach deep inside yourself and be your very best. 11/ Each one of us could rise above the pain, the disappointment, the agony, and then be strong. We all had the ability to carry on, and not only to survive but to inspire others. 12/ Hope is the most powerful force in the universe. 13/ Quitting never makes anything easier. The quitter regrets of his decision for the rest of his life. 14/ Life is full of difficult times. But someone out there has worse than you. Because if you are aware, it is life, life, and life alone - moving from one form of existence to the other. 2/ Death is not a tragedy. People spending their entire lives without experiencing life is a tragedy. If you are afraid of death, you will fail to live, and still wont escape death anyways. 3/ Life is a joy if you are able to control your mind and health. Death is compassion because it relieves you. Life needs a certain amount of tension to continue. Death is the highest relaxation. If death doesn't come to you at the right time, you will have a miserable life. You will long for death. 4/ Inhalation is life. Exhalation is like Death. Exhalation is most relaxing. Inhalation creates an optimal tension. 5/ Don't try to avoid anything in life. Let life happen to you. Did we come here to "experience" life, or "avoid" life. The moment we try to avoid life, death starts to come closer - because that is what we are asking. 6/ There are a total of 114 chakras, 112 inside the body and 2 outside the body. Those 112 inside are categorized into 7 groups. The level of activation of chakras greatly determines the quality of life. Same way, the quality of death is characterized not just by how pranas have exited the body, but through which chakras they have exited. 7/ One of the ways to regularly cleanse yourself is to take bath in flowing water like a river. If not river, a bath every day even in your own house does a lot of good to you - makes you feel better by removing negativity. 8/ There are more rich people that commit suicide than poor. A poor person lives in hope of a better life. For the rich, there is hopelessness. And hopelessness arises because we have not learnt how to handle life and its various aspects. If life is not making enough sense to you, then it is obvious that you do not have enough sense. 9/ Nothing gives you the right to take your life, because you are not capable of creating a new life. 10/ Grief and joy are both infectious. You have to make up your mind as to what you want to infect the world with. 11/ Time for you is measured by the number of breaths and not by the clock or the number of calendar years. If we slow down our metabolism and breathe fewer times, we will live longer as per the calendar years. 12/ Its a misconception that miserable people want to die. In fact they want to cling on to life more than others. Happy people are loosely attached to life. The more miserable they are, the more they cling to everything in life. 13/ When we have to go on a long journey, we always prepare ourselves well. The journey after death is a pretty long one, especially if we compare it with our life span. Therefore preparing to die well is vital. So, ideally, we should know how to live blissfully and then leave the body in the best possible manner - without fear. 14/ Why are people afraid of dead bodies - whom they don't even know? Living bodies can be dangerous but dead bodies are absolutely safe. The fear of death is because we are ignoring the reality called as death. 15/ We get so attached to the body and talk about it as of we came with it. We did not. We gathered it starting from mothers womb and naturally, we will lose it as well. This may be my body but this is not me. I am more than the body. There are many other dimensions that our soul needs to experience other than this body. 16/ Living in this body is like a bank loan. You can take a 10 year loan, but you have to pay it back for sure. In reality, there is nothing called as fear. Its just imagination, cooked up. 19/ Constantly reminding yourself that you are mortal, and you may die today can take away your fear of death. If you religiously practice this consciously, and when the time to actually die comes close, it will not be a very big deal for you. 20/ After a certain age, when one is done with responsibilities in life, one should move out of the house and get close to nature (Vanaprastha in ancient India). That is a wonderful way to live the remainder of the life and accept death, rather than continuing to live with the loved ones in hospital beds. 21/ Living your life is like a flowing river - moving with a particular goal in a direction. We decide where we want to go, what we want to do. Even if we are hungry and the food is in front of us, we may decide not to eat it at our discretion. Once you leave the body, you are like an evaporated form of water or clouds - you will flow where the wind takes you. There is no purpose, no mission, no goal. Angels, as they say, are looked up in the skies. When we die, we lose our discretion powers. 22/ In the absence of description powers, the last state while dying is vital. Because this last state can multiply manifolds after my death since we will not have discretionary powers. While alive, we can get angry and then control it. Post-death, we have no control. Thus dying well, dying in peace and happiness and satisfaction is vital, since this decides the quality of path ahead. 23/ Any experience of grief shows our own incompleteness. Otherwise, the world is perfectly complete. 24/ Letting people die gracefully is needed. We cannot latch on to people. Dying completes their cycle. Imagine the poor state of the world if we don't let people die. 25/ Life is complicated only if you are hell bent on moving the world in a particular direction. For everyone else who accept things as is, what's complicated in life? 26/ Nature is not thinking in terms of punishment or reward for your next birth. Whatever is unfulfilled within you at the time of your death, you get the kind of body that is suited to best fulfil those tendencies. Ex- if a money hoarder dies with unfulfilled desires about hoarding enough money, he may end up becoming an ant or a bee - just so that his hoarding tendencies are fulfilled. 27/ Don't waste your time and effort digging into the past lives. Make good use of the life that you have in hand right now. If you can do just that, it is more than enough. 28/ It is only the master-disciple relationship that can transcend lifetimes because this relationship is based on energy and not on needs. We think that the money is limited. This false belief about the scarcity of money drives negative behavior like greed, jealousy, and fear. Imagine if you could truly believe that there was unlimited money and that there was no hurry. 2/ Money that is used to create love and happiness is happy money. It has an extremely fast compounding rate. 3/ If you could count on money being there for you today, and also would be there for you in the future, then it is quite likely that you are living a happy and satisfying life. You may not be wealthy but you are likely to be feeling blessed. 4/ Money cannot buy happiness. Nothing can. However, it is a lot easier to be free from the anger of the past, and worries of the future, with the money by your side. 5/ Many studies reveal that person's happiness grows in direct proportion to money but only to about a million USD which roughly translates to your financial freedom. (2) We cannot define where greatness begins or ends. We can only strive to become better. (3) Stop trying to impress people. Impress yourself, stretch yourself, test yourself. Be your best version. Outdoing yourself is your daily task. You are competing with your version of yesterday. (4) Self-love is all about first accepting yourself unconditionally and then making positive changes to become even better. Same way, you can love any of your family members - accept them unconditionally, and encourage them to be even better. (5) The vibrations we put out, are always pulling in stuff that is vibrating at a similar frequency - just like tuning into a radio station. So, if you consciously start feeling joyful, you will attract more of it. The common misconception is that you will start feeling good only once you have what you want. The truth is that you can feel good right now, and also attract more of it. (6) Staying around positive people, when you are down, is an excellent antidote to absorb some of their positive energy, then start radiating that positive energy yourself and thus attracting more of it from the universe. It is much easier to see the good in life when you are around positive people. (7) Smile more often. Even if you fake a smile, you can trick your brain into thinking that you are happy, and thereby releasing feel-good hormones called endorphins, which make you feel better in return. (8) Most judgments start from hatred, which is a low vibrational state. It only leads to attracting unpleasant experiences in our life. (9) Greatness starts with being grateful. In order to truly feel grateful towards any particular thing, imagine your life in its absence, as deep as you can think, and you will soon realize how grateful you truly have been. (10) Meditation is easy. It is all about listening to life - breath, sounds, colors around us at this very moment. (11) Your longest relationship in life is with your own self. If you can manage this relationship well, give it the importance it deserves, can you manage other relationships well. (12) If someone says that they are hurt by your actions, then you must believe what they are saying rather than ignore their viewpoint just because you did not feel anything hurting in what you said. It's because you have violated their personal values. Accepting that they are hurt will change your behavior to empathy. (13) All relationships require work. They require tremendous understanding and endless communication. In spite of all this, they can be very challenging. None of us is perfect. So, no relationship is perfect. (14) You will know that it is your soul talking to you when you arrive at the answer without going through the reasoning process. (15) Everyone's perspective, including our own, is limited and subjective. It is based on what we gather and process from all around us. So, be open to learning a new perspective every time you meet someone. (16) There is no way you can avoid negativity in your life. The more people you are connected with, the more negativity would be thrown at you. But no one can hurt you without your permission. The best response to negativity thrown at you is silence and joy. This will make the haters feel that they are banging against a wall that does not respond. They will hurt themselves and refrain after some time. (18) Your purpose is not to be in a job you dislike for the rest of your life. Harmful workplaces push us into an unhealthy mental state, leading to an unhealthy physical state. (19) You won't be important to all the people all the time, and that's why you have to be important to yourself. Learn to enjoy your own company. (20) You have done things some people said you could never do. You have also done things even you thought you may never be able to do. Appreciate yourself. Pat yourself. Go out and celebrate. (21) Either way, you are going to be judged, whether you live your life on your own terms, or other people's. (22) Embrace your uniqueness. Are you considered weird? Awesome. (23) Forgive yourself for all the bad decisions you made, for the lack of belief, for hurting others and yourself. Forgive yourself for everything. Important is to move forward with a better mindset. (24) You cannot expect others to be kind to you if you are not kind to yourself. (25) When you forgive people for past mistakes, you cannot, and do not improve the past. You improve your present and future by creating positive vibes. Forgiving someone is for your better life. (26) You cannot move forward with the thoughts that hold you back. (27) Once you mute the noise of the world, you would realize that there is nothing that you cannot do. (28) If you cannot change the situation, change your perception of it. That is where your personal power is. Take charge. (29) Your job is not to get rid of negative events or negative thoughts - you cannot. Rather, your job is to improve your response to these events and thoughts. Once the code is fed in, then the subconscious mind will run them automatically, and do anything to fructify the instructions. (32) Things are easier when you are in the mood to do them. But if you are looking for a greater life, you have to commit yourself to the same effort even when you are not in the mood. Commitment to your dreams, therefore, is the greatest virtue. If you break up a bigger goal into smaller ones, then more goals are achieved as a natural bi-product of the bigger goal, leading to more dopamine release, which is good for you. It is a soft skill, where how you behave is far more important than what you know. Knowledge is good but knowing what to do has nothing to do with what goes in your mind before you try to do it. 4/ All subjects are governed by defined rules - be it physics, chemistry, mathematics, or any other. Finance, however, is driven by emotions and the psychology and behavior of people. 5/ Studying the history of money makes you feel that you understand something pretty well. Once you understand you assume that you will behave according to the understanding. That's not life at all. We have a lot of knowledge but we hardly implement it in our lives. If you need or rather, greed for money makes you compromise on these, you got to re-think and define your money boundaries. A clear financial freedom plan helps you define your boundaries. 11/ Warren Buffett is a great investor, but his wealth is not just because of being a great investor. There are far better investors than him. His wealth, apart from being a great investor, is driven by the number of years for which he has been investing now - 75 years. His skill is investing but his secret is time. Of his USD 84.5 billion net worth, USD 84.2 billion was accumulated after the age of 50 ie after investing for 40+ years. That is the maximum period for which most of us would invest, and therefore we stand little chance to make it that big, unless we start pretty early in life. 12/ Good investing is not about getting very high returns. That's not replicable over many years. Good investing is about getting decent enough returns over decades. That's when compounding turns wild. 13/ Getting money, and being able to keep that money are two vastly different skills. Getting money requires action, taking risks, being positive. Keeping money requires just the opposite skills - playing safe, being fearful, and a lot of inaction. 14/ As in the case of airline pilots, investing is all about hours and hours of cruise control punctuated by moments of sheer madness. An investing genius will do ordinary things when everyone around is going crazy. 15/ Tails drive everything in finance. It's normal for a lot of things to go wrong a lot of times. No one makes good decisions all the time. Buffet has owned 400-500 stocks in his lifetime and made most of his money in at most 10 stocks. Rest was just average. 16/ We will all go right as well as wrong in our decisions. But how much money we make when we are right, and how less we lose when we are wrong - will decide our future wealth. 17/ The freedom to do what you want, when you want, with whom you want, for as long as yo want, is true freedom. This is the highest form of dividend that your money can pay you. Money's greatest intrinsic value is its ability to get you control over your time. 18/ Doing something you love on a schedule you don't want, is equivalent to doing something you hate. 19/ We, as humans, in spite of all the technological advancements have lost control over our personal time, and loss of this control is the key to unhappy lives today [Recommended Read: Happiness Unlimited] 20/ No one is impressed with your possessions as much as you are. 21/ You might think you want a big house, a fancy car, and an expensive watch. But this is not the inner truth. The fact is that you want respect and admiration. You might think that the expensive stuff may help you get respect and admiration, but it rarely does, especially from the people you want to admire or respect you. 22/ Wealth is what you do not see. House, cars, vacations, etc is not wealth. Assets, investments that have not yet been converted into houses, cars, and vacations define your wealth. 23/ Rich is the current income. Wealth is income not spent. Wealth is hard because it requires self-control. 24/ The world is full of people who look modest but are really wealthy, and also those who look rich but are almost insolvent. 25/ Building wealth has little to do with your income or investment returns but a lot to do with your savings rate. There is a lot of uncertainty and risk in the first two. 3rd is the only factor that you control. You can build wealth without a high income, but there is no way you can build wealth without a high savings rate. 26/ Being rational and technically correct may not be enough to stick in the game. It is more important to be reasonable to yourself. Being reasonable allows you to stay in the game longer, and the longer you stay, the more wealth you create. 27/ History rarely tells you anything about the future of investments, because unlike the planet for astroscientists, or the human body for doctors, investors are indeed emotional. 28/ Past surprises cannot be used as a guide to define future boundaries. Use past surprises as an admission of the fact that we have no idea what might happen next. 29/ Risk comes from the unknown. There will always be unprecedented events, for which we will never be prepared, and therefore, will have a massive impact on how the world operates. 30/ Since economies evolve, recent history is often the best guide to the future because it is more likely to factor in conditions that are still relevant today. The farther back you go in history, the more general your takeaways would be e.g. human emotions haven't changed much over the last 100 years. 31/ The best way to achieve felicity is to aim low. 32/ People are poor forecasters of their future self. Only 27% of college graduates have a job related to their major subject. Plans will change because we change. Hence, your plan has to be adaptable to changes as you move along creating wealth. 33/ The price that you pay for good investment returns is to withstand the market volatility. It is definitely not an easy price to pay. Not everyone will be able to pay for it. Most people who try to go in and come out and try to time the market is trying to get good returns without paying the price - something that never works. 34/ Bubble formation is not so much about people irrationally participating in long term investing. It's about people rationally moving towards short-term trading to capture the momentum that is self-feeding. Short term trading is rational, natural, and expected. But long term investors cannot afford to be driven with that. 35/ Spend enough time identifying your game and stick to it. And realize that different players are playing different games with a different set of rules. A lot of money is lost in trying to copy the actions of other players, resulting in financial disasters. 36/ Extremely good and extremely bad circumstances rarely remain that way for long because supply and demand adapt in hard to predict ways. 37/ Growth is driven by compounding, which can take decades, and therefore, hardly gets to be noticed. Destruction is driven by single points of failure or loss of confidence, which happens almost instantly, and grabs instant attention. 38/ We know a lot less about how the world works than what we think we do. 39/ History cannot be interpreted without applying our selection process, which happens to be an art. This indicates that the same history can teach different things to different people. The ability to explain the past gives us the illusion that the world is understandable. That's enough to do blunders in personal finance. 40/ We all want the complex world we live in to make sense, and therefore we create stories to fill in the things that we do not understand. 41/ Risk is what is left over when you think that you have thought through everything. Any predictions are illusionary. 42/ Good decisions are not always rational. This seems very difficult to swallow, for two reasons: (a) no physical or neurophysiological mechanism through which this gravitational (or another sort of) attraction is supposed to act is ever even hinted at, much less explained; and (b) the gravitational pull of the delivering obstetrician far outweighs that of the planet or planets involved. Remember that the gravitational force an object exerts on a body – say, a newborn baby – is proportional to the object’s mass but inversely proportional to the square of the distance of the object from the body – in this case, the baby. Does this mean that fat obstetricians deliver babies that have one set of personality characteristics, and skinny ones deliver babies that have quite different characteristics? These deficiencies of an astrological theory are less visible to the innumerate, who are not likely to concern themselves with mechanisms, and who are seldom interested in comparing magnitudes. 11/ Most diseases or conditions (a) improve by themselves; (b) are self-limiting; or (c) even if fatal, seldom follow a strictly downward spiral. In each case, intervention, no matter how worthless, can appear to be quite efficacious. This becomes clearer if you assume the point of view of a knowing practitioner of fraudulent medicine. To take advantage of the natural ups and downs of any disease (as well as of any placebo effect), it’s best to begin your worthless treatment when the patient is getting worse. In this way, anything that happens can more easily be attributed to your wonderful and probably expensive intervention. If the patient improves, you take credit; if he remains stable, your treatment stopped his downward course. On the other hand, if the patient worsens, the dosage or intensity of the treatment was not great enough; if he dies, he delayed too long in coming to you. In any case, the few instances in which your intervention is successful will likely be remembered (not so few, if the disease in question is self-limiting), while the vast majority of failures will be forgotten and buried. Chance provides more than enough variation to account for the sprinkling of successes that will occur with almost any treatment; indeed, it would be a miracle if there weren’t any ‘miracle cures.’ 12/ What’s wrong with the following not quite impeccable logic? We know that 36 inches = 1 yard. Therefore, 9 inches = ¼ of a yard. Since the square root of 9 is 3 and the square root of ¼ is ½, we conclude that 3 inches = ½ yard! 13/ Not being able to conclusively refute the claims does not constitute evidence for them. 14/ If you walk down the main street of a resort town any summer night, for example, and see happy people holding hands, eating ice-cream cones, laughing, etc., it’s easy to begin to think that other people are happier, more loving, more productive than you are, and so become unnecessarily despondent. Yet it is precisely on such occasions that people display their good attributes, whereas they tend to hide and become ‘invisible’ when they are depressed. We should all remember that our impressions of others are usually filtered in this way and that our sampling of people and their moods are not random. 15/ Any given individual, no matter how brilliant or rich or attractive he or she is is going to have serious shortcomings. Excessive concern with oneself makes it difficult to see this and thus can lead to depression as well as innumeracy 16/ Bad things happen periodically, and they’re going to happen to somebody. Why not 17/ Remember that rarity in itself leads to publicity, making rare events appear commonplace. Terrorist kidnappings and cyanide poisonings are given monumental coverage, with profiles of the distraught families, etc., yet the number of deaths due to smoking is roughly the equivalent of three fully loaded jumbo jets crashing each and every day of the year, more than 300,000 Americans annually. AIDS, as tragic as it is, pales in worldwide comparison to the more prosaic malaria, among other diseases. Alcohol abuse, which in this country is the direct cause of 80,000 to 100,000 deaths per year and a contributing factor in an additional 100,000 deaths, is by a variety of measures considerably more costly than drug abuse. It’s not hard to think of other examples (famines and even genocides scandalously underreported), but it’s necessary to remind ourselves of them periodically to keep our heads above the snow of media avalanches. 18/ Very intelligent people can be expected to have intelligent offspring, but in general, the offspring will not be as intelligent as the parents. A similar tendency toward the average or mean holds for the children of very short parents, who are likely to be short, but not as short as their parents. If I throw twenty darts at a target and manage to hit the bulls-eye eighteen times, the next time I throw twenty darts, I probably won’t do as well. This phenomenon leads to nonsense when people attribute the regression to the mean as due to some particular scientific law, rather than to the natural behavior of any random quantity. If a beginning pilot makes a very good landing, it’s likely that his next one will not be as impressive. Likewise, if his landing is very bumpy, then, by chance alone, his next one will likely be better. Regression to the mean is a widespread phenomenon, with instances just about everywhere you look. 19/ Judy is thirty-three, unmarried, and quite assertive. A magna cum laude graduate, she majored in political science in college and was deeply involved in campus social affairs, especially in anti-discrimination and anti-nuclear issues. Which statement is more probable? (a) Judy works as a bank teller. (b) Judy works as a bank teller and is active in the feminist movement. The answer, surprising to some, is that (a) is more probable than (b) since a single statement is always more probable than a conjunction of two statements. That I will get heads when I flip this coin is more probable than that I will get heads when I flip this coin and get a 6 when I roll that die. 20/ We find that detail and vividness vary inversely with likelihood; the more vivid details there are to a story, the less likely the story is to be true 21/ Choose between a sure $30,000 or an 80 percent chance of winning $40,000 and a 20 percent chance of winning nothing. Most people will take the $30,000 even though the average expected gain in the latter choice is $32,000 (40,000 × .8). What if the choices are either a sure loss of $30,000 or an 80 percent chance of losing $40,000 and a 20 percent chance of losing nothing? Here most people will take the chance of losing $40,000 in order to have a chance of avoiding any loss, even though the average expected loss in the latter choice is $32,000 (40,000 × .8). Tversky and Kahneman concluded that people tend to avoid risk when seeking gains, but choose risk to avoid losses. 22/ An item whose price has been increased by 50 percent and then reduced by 50 percent has had a net reduction in price of 25 percent. A dress whose price has been ‘slashed’ 40 percent and then another 40 percent has been reduced in price by 64 percent, not 80 percent. The new toothpaste which reduces cavities by 200 percent is presumably capable of removing all of one’s cavities twice over, maybe once by filling them and once again by placing little bumps on the teeth where they used to be. The 200 percent figure, if it means anything at all, might indicate that the new toothpaste reduces cavities by, say 30 percent, compared to some standard toothpaste’s reduction of cavities by 10 percent (the 30 percent reduction being a 200 percent increase of the 10 percent reduction). The latter phrasing, while less misleading, is also less impressive, which explains why it isn’t used. The simple expedient of always asking oneself: ‘Percentage of what?’ is a good one to adopt. If profits are 12 percent, for example, is this 12 percent of costs, of sales, of last year’s profits, or of what? 23/ According to government figures released in 1980, women earn 59 percent of what men do. Though it’s been quoted widely since then, the statistic isn’t strong enough to support the burden placed on it Without further detailed data not included in the study, it’s not clear what conclusions are warranted. Does the figure mean that for exactly the same jobs that men perform, women earn 59 percent of the men’s salaries? Does the figure take into account the increasing number of women in the workforce, and their age and experience? Does it take into account the relatively low-paying jobs many women have (clerical, teaching, nursing, etc.)? Does it take into account the fact that the husband’s job generally determines where a married couple will live? Does it take into account the higher percentage of women working toward a short-term goal? The answer to all these questions is no. The bald figure released merely stated that the median income of full-time women workers was 59 percent of that for men. 24/ If each of the ten items needed for the manufacture of something or other has risen 8 percent, the total price has risen just 8 percent, not 80 percent. A deeper understanding and appreciation of every moment can help us lead a happier life. 3/ Anti-fragility Fragile gets weakened when harmed. Resilient or robust resist the shock and stay the same. Anti fragile gets better when harmed. Fighting for financial freedom adds anti fragility to your financial life. By adopting an anti fragile attitude, we start to love setbacks, because each setback is an opportunity to grow. We find a way to get stronger with every blow, staying focused on our ikigai. 4/ Logo therapy This was popularised by Victor Frankl and it essentially is a philosophy which helps you find reasons to live. He believed that everything can be taken from a human but one thing - the last of human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given situation 5/ Flow It is a state in which one is so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter. The experience itself is so enjoyable that people would do it for the sheer sake of doing it. So, here we go with our 15 greatest lessons from this book that influenced me immensely. 1/ A human is not a being; he is a becoming. He is an ongoing process – a possibility. If there is any limit to what we can achieve and become, to the possibilities in life - that limit is created by us and no one else. Our mind is as powerful as we think it is. [ Recommended Book --> 'Dream' On by Manoj Arora] 2/ Right now, your idea of who you are – your sense and experience of who you are – is very strong. You are here as an individual, but what the trees exhale, you inhale, and what you exhale, they inhale. Or in other words, one half of your lung is hanging up there. Without it, your lungs within would be dysfunctional. Yet, in your experience, you think this individual is everything. As an individual, we cannot achieve much- rather it is difficult to survive beyond a few seconds. If we are so dependent on the world around us, then there is no place for ego and self centeraism in case 'you' achieved anything. 3/ Reading a book to know about yourself is silly. You are here, alive and kicking! It is alright if you are reading a book to get inspired to take a step inward, but if you want to know something, you must look inward. The entire knowledge of the universe is zipped inside you. You may look out for some specific information,but this informationis useful only if you have visualised it inside, connected it inside to some thoughts, beliefs qand actions in life. The power will come from experience the outside information inside. 4/ What about your system? This is the gadget. Every damn gadget has come out of this. What percentage of this gadget do you think you are employing? It is well below one percent, because for your survival process, to conduct your life in the material world, you do not even need one percent of your system’s potential. Your body is capable of perceiving the whole cosmos. We are much more powerful than anything outside us. Survival is not what we are here for. That is extreme underutilisation of our capabilities. 5/ Any animal in nature – whether a worm, insect, bird or animal – is made far more capable than you. The human body has come with a different capability altogether. 6/ Most human beings instead of looking beyond the needs of survival, have just raised their standards of survival. We are raising the bar, but it is still only survival. This is an unintelligent way of using the human mechanism which has come with a different possibility altogether. 7/ The quality of your life is decided not by what kind of clothes you wear, what kind of car you drive or what kind of home you live in, but by how peaceful and joyful you are within yourself. This is essentially the quality of your life. Everything else is done to get there. If this does not happen, everything else goes waste. Happy and Peaceful life for our own self is the end purpose (the root cause) of everything that we do - be it helping others, taking care of our families, charity, social work, building a great career. In the end, we are only looking for experiencing and sharing happiness. 8/ Where the receptivity is in your hand and where the giving nature of the feet is – if these two things are connected – you may achieve in a moment what you cannot achieve in years of sadhana. It is with that hope that everybody is diving for the feet all the time, hoping that somewhere they may connect. Hands are for reception and feet are for giving. That is how these sense organs have been designed. This is also where the age old Indian tradition of touching your elder's feet find its unique relevance. You are trying to recieve something extraordinary from someone. 9/ Temples were never built as places of worship or prayer. In a temple, nobody leads you in prayer as it is done in a church; you are just left alone. You are supposed to sit there, that is all. These were energy centers which handle that dimension of the impact on your life which comes from the outside. 10/ Health is not the goal of life. There are more people on this planet healthy and miserable than unhealthy and miserable. At least if you are unhealthy, you have a good excuse for your misery. Health and misery, you have no excuse Health is important, very important - but it can never be the goal or the purpose of your life. Just like money, it acts a means to achieve your end objectives. At the end of your life, you will leave both your health and your money but your mission could be carried on by the next generation. 11/ The air that you breathe, the water that you drink, the food that you eat, the land that you walk upon, and the fire of life in the form of the life force –if you keep these controlled and focused, then health, wellbeing and success in the world are assured. 12/ As a little blade of grass has shot out of the earth, you are also like that – a little mobile, that’s all. 13/ Smear the earth upon the body. By just being in touch with the earth, the system will start reorganizing itself. The body is reminded of its own nature in a very fundamental way, and that reminder must be on all the time. Get off your high cot, just sleep on the floor. You can clearly notice that there will be a great sense of health in your body. in the first one-and-a-half feet from the Earth, the thickness of the pranic vibration is a lot more than it is above. As it goes up, it becomes thinner and thinner. Stay grounded and down to the earth - literally :) 14/ In today’s water supply system, water is pumped forcefully through a pipe, and it may take fifty bends before coming to your tap. By the time the water lands in your house, they are saying that sixty percent of it will be poisonous –not chemically, but because its molecular structure will have changed. It may not be contaminated the way you normally look at it in terms of bacteria, but just the force of travel is making the molecular structure change in such a way that it is no longer beneficial, perhaps even poisonous. If you hold this water in a copper vessel and keep it there for ten or twelve hours, the damage will undo itself. Step by step, we must keep improving. Atleast in our house, we have taken a step to drink overnight stored water from an earthen pot. We do not keep water in our refrigerator and never drink it directly from the tap. When you come to our house as a guest, this is what we will offer you as well. 15/ If with just a thought or a look, you can turn the water in a vessel sweet, then with the right kind of attitude, focus, and attention towards it, can’t you turn sweet the water in this vessel of the body? If you turn that water sweet, you are seventy-two percent sweet. Positive vibrations, thoughts and our subconcious mind can act wonders. We can charge the water we drink, and if we are 75% water - then a lot of positive energy is likely to go inside us. As it is said, our thoughts create our destiny. Cheers ...more |

"It is not over until you Win" by Les Brown is a book that lists down some of the success principles which may not really be new in success literature, but what makes this book unique is the uniqueness of his story and presentation of success principles in a rather refreshing manner. I, hereby, list down the 14 of my learnings from this epic book. These learnings are worded and appended in a way that makes it easier for most of us to understand and absorb. So, here we go with the list of 14 of my Book Lessons from this book that influenced me immensely. (1) It is important to enjoy those times when life smiles at you. Do not spend all your time planning for the next goal, rather do spend time to enjoy some of the milestones that you have already achieved. (2) Nobody has all the answers all the time but there is always a way. You got to believe in the fact that if there is a problem, there has to be a solution. It may take time, effort and energy to discover it, but the fact that there is a solution, should never make you lose hope. (3) You are always more powerful than the conditions that surround you. There is immense power in you. You are HIS creation, and how can HIS creation be weak or fragile? You must believe in your enormous potential, and leave a lasting impression around the world. (4) If you risk your life staying in a zone which is comfortable and secure, you may regret not exposing your talent to the world. If you truly believe that your potential is enormous, the only next thing that is going to stop you is the lack of ability to come out of your comfort zone. (5) Fear death, if you want to, but don't fear life. Learn to live before you die. Each one of us have the same beginning and the same end. It is the journey inbetween that we can script our own. (6) Be careful what you dream and expect. You might just get it, or it may get you. Your thoughts and dreams are energy. They are transmitted to this Universe, and they come back to you in the form of your destiny. (7) Leave it to the woman you love, to remind you of your Values and the person you are. That is why a woman can never be the same as a man. She has some unique abilities, wisdom and talent that a man is not designed to possess. You must trust your Intellectual Companion to show you the right way in the direction of your values. (8) The only person who can potentially stop you from achieving your dreams is the person standing in your shoes. What you get in life is what you subconsciously you believe you deserve. Your conversations and self talk with yourself holds the key. Your self confidence in your own abilities will define where you end up. (9) Time just sneaks away before you can get a sense of how much has already sneaked. If you have unfulfilled dreams, write them down and go after them right away, with a sense of urgency. Time happens to be your biggest asset in life. If you are spending your time on the things that you do not love to do, you are just wasting your life. In fact, time is the only currency. (10) To reach success, you have to pass failure. It is OK to try and fail rather than not trying at all. Failures add meaning, texture and value to our success. Not only that, failure is critical and mandatory for success. You got to prepare yourself, and failure is what will teach you and prepares you for success. Each setback and failure is a little nudge from HIM to Dream On. (11) Momentum while chasing your dream is vital. It opens up enormous unseen opportunities. There has to be an urgency to succeed. Your generated momentum will help you overcome many obstacles which you would otherwise find more difficult to overcome or will spend more than the required time and energy to do so. (12) You have to push at the edges constantly because you never know when life would give in a little and open up new opportunities for you. Coming out of your comfort zone involves trying new things, and making yourself push hard and become uncomfortable. Transform yourself. 2/ When I was in school, a teacher said that I would never be successful. Things like these stick, and then motivate you. Yes, they do. Negativity around you can push you into a corner OR can pull you out of your comfort zone to break the shackles and write your own destiny. It all depends on how you tackle the power of this negative energy. 3/ Nothing is impossible, and because nothing is impossible, you need to dream big dreams. What you achieve is decided by the size of your dreams. Keep no inhibitions in your mind. Dream big, because nothing is impossible. Nothing is unattainable. You need to break the imaginary wall of excuses that you have created around yourself. Ask "Why Not" more often to yourself. Challenge your abilities. 4/ The will to succeed is everything. 5/ In a weird way, my broken leg gave me a sense of urgency which later on proved to be a big positive for me. A setback usually comes with a negative mask but is usually there in your life to transform you, provided you are willing to learn and accept the fact that it is mandatory for you to face setbacks, if you have to elevate yourself. Every setback is a little nudge from GOD for you to Dream On higher in life. It is only after you have transformed, and you look back at your life in retrospect, that you realise the importance of those setbacks in your life. 6/ You can't Dream up confidence or self belief. Confidence is born of demonstrated ability. To gain confidence, action - rigorous action - is mandatory. You have to be on the ground and try it out. Once you have achieved or are close to achieving or are improving, you start getting confident about yourself and your abilities. There is no other way. There is absolutely no other short cut. Your ability has to be demonstrated on the ground. You just cannot acquire confidence via mere visualisation or dreaming big or reading about successful people. 7/ I never ever train against other people. I train myself to win against the clock. I never aimed to be the best athlete ever. I always aimed to be the best athlete I could be Competing with others is a sure shot recipe to create stress for yourself, and also to put a limit to your potential. You can enjoy a blissful life with achievements far exceeding anyone else only if you win against the clock. What do great champions like Tiger Woods say after any event - I was good in the last round, I could manage the last lap pretty well today... Not like... I was worried whether I would be able to beat him. Great champions have no competition. They are always competing with themselves.. And that's where they are always focused. 8/ Attitude, Action, Achievement (AAA) - That is the order in which you can expect to achieve things. You are going to be an Olympic gold medalist in Attitude long before you have a medal around your neck. Your Attitude in life determines your Altitude. That's exactly how important Attitude is. Give it any lesser priority, at your own peril. Your mastery and achievement in your craft is mandatorily preceded by your mastery in Attitude and then a mastery in your action. It is only after that you can think of achieving something extraordinary. 9/ People always step up and do things out of the ordinary at the Olympics The environment in which you perform creates a big impact on your own performance. In marathons that I have been personally running every year, we call it as a "Race Day Magic". Keep yourself in great company so that you can brush your thoughts with the greatest around. 10/ Set your goals high. Then work rigorously every day to achieve them Setting your goals is very important. But the challenge only starts there. It is the day to day work that you have to perform to achieve your goal that is going to test you. Focus on the daily routine, the daily process and do it consistently to achieve your goals. Hard work, skill, patience - all are important, but daily consistency is the key. 11/ Greatness comes from longevity It is good to achieve your goals. But the journey from Good to Great comes only if you achieve them over and over and over.......again and again. You have to go out and prove that your achievements are not fluke. 12/ I tried to do something bold at Athens, and failed. But it is trying that matters. Achievement is important, but trying is what is vital. Achievement is not feasible without trying while vice versa is not true. You do not learn when you achieve, but you learn and improve only when you go out and try. 13/ It takes time, energy, heart and soul to get things done. If I was sometimes not in the right mood to practice, I had to get myself in the right mood. How you feel is how you think, and how you think is 100% in your control. No situation, no person, nothing outside you can impact your thoughts, unless you allow it to. If you are not feeling like chasing your goal today, then change how you feel by changing what you are thinking. 14/ To focus, understand "WIN". "What's important now". When challenged and stretched, understand what is important now You may be deep in shit, but being there, forget where you were earlier in favourable times. In that tough situation, you must focus fully so that you can come out of it. Do not keep comparing it to your earlier situation. Focus, Focus hard on your current situation and think about what best can be done now. Do not waste time. What is important now is what will matter later. A champion can deal with any kind of pressure under any circumstances. 15/ No one is more important than anyone else to be treated any differently We were all born equal. We had our fair share of opportunities. Though we achieve different levels of success, we play an equally important part in the drama of life, and in the success of others. No one can achieve anything of one's own. Everyone needs immense support for success, and therefore everyone has an important role to play. 16/ However difficult your goals may seem, there is nothing that is not possible, as long as you keep dreaming on the possibilities (after winning the 7th gold at Beijing by 1/100 th of a second) Never let anyone tell you that anything is impossible. If ever there were small things that you could potentially achieve you extraordinary results, you ought to read this book. This book has the potential to impact your daily life by bringing in the minimal changes and achieving remarkable outcomes... Do you already follow some of them? Read on.. "The Small BIG" by Steve J Martin / Noah J Goldstein and Robert B Cialdini is an awesome read. There are 52 small changes mentioned in the book (perhaps one for a week) that you can bring in yourself or your environment to bring in extraordinary results in your life. You may be aware / may have read about some of these in one form or the other but I have listed 20 of my Book Lessons that influenced me sharply. (1) Social proof - the evidence of crowd The evidence of crowd following a specific thing is a big influencer to people behavior. Our behavior is largely influenced by the behavior of others around us. So, while selling a product, if you can highlight the number of positive feedback, reviews etc, it influences people to take a decision too. (2) Reason not required People who get influenced by the decision of the crowd often do not know or do not want to know the reason for their decision. (3) Specific Evidence More specific is the evidence, more is the probability of others to follow. It is advisable to give real time specific information when talking about any concept or product. (4) Uniqueness People seek to define themselves based on what makes them unique. If possessing a specific product or a concept will bring people in a unique category, they are more likely to go for it. (5) Client's Success One of the biggest way to motivate an employee is to remind him / her of the significance of his / her role to client's success (6) The Broken Windows phenomenon The Broken Windows phenomenon suggests the importance of keeping small things neat and tidy and how these positively influences others. (7) The sweetest word Our own name is the sweetest word we hear. Use the recipient's name quite often in your communication with others to keep them interested in what you are trying to convey. (8) Ask questions to confirm decisions You can persuade people by asking questions that plan and confirm their decision rather than a question which could confirm or negate a proposition. As an example, if you are pursuing a key person to attend a meeting, instead of asking 'Are you attending the meeting today?', you might ask a confirmatory question 'What are you doing just before our meeting today?'. Whatever be the answer of the person to the later question, you have got a confirmation for the meeting in any case. (9) Lock people to commit to decisions You can lock people to commit to decisions by letting them know that the decision is implementable in far future rather than in the near future. This is especially true if they are not very sure of their decision today. (10) Meaningful distractions Meaningful distractions for people waiting in queue can drastically reduce their frustration and improve loyalty. (11) The Right Seating Arrangement A circular seating arrangement nurtures collaboration while a square or rectangular seating arrangement promotes uniqueness and ownership. So, depending on the way you want to drive the meeting, you might choose an appropriate conference room. (12) Unsure Experts People expect experts to be certain about their opinions. But it is only when the expert expresses uncertainties that people are truly drawn into what they are saying. This is perhaps because they believe that no one can know everything, and an honest expression of uncertainty goes a long way in building the trust factor. (13) Room Size People are proven to think more creatively if the room has a high ceiling or, even better, is an open lawn. So, it is not only you feel better in an open space, but also think better and more creative. Another reason, I should again start sleeping in an open terrace rather than an air conditioned room. (14) Visualisation Once again, it is proven beyond doubt. You can recollect all your power by writing down or visualising your powerful moments from past. (15) Questions and Questions There are no silly questions... Ask questions, ask help as often as you can. (16) Be the first one While negotiating, be the first one to place an offer and make sure that the offer is as precise as it is feasible. The first offer becomes the baseline and drives the entire negotiation discussion. (17) Cost Saving When selling, don't just focus on cost savings for the client, but highlight what could potentially be done with the saved cost, thus leveraging the concept of Cost of lost opportunity, if the client does not go with you. (18) Chasing Goals - Small Area Hypothesis When starting to chase goals, focus on the smaller achievements in the early phases (like 10% done rather than 90% remaining) and on smaller pending activities at a later stage (like 10% remaining rather than 90% done). This is called small area hypothesis and keeps you motivated towards your goal. (19) From a Distance Taking a physical step back and viewing the task from a greater distance can reduce your perception of how difficult the task of actually is. So, if you're stuck with a stubborn problem or are not able to take a decision, actually take a few physical steps back from the problem and re-think. (20) Peak-End Effect / Duration Neglect Every experience has a 'peak-end' effect i.e. we tend to remember the peak experience and the end of the experience e.g. Remember one of your older vacation and you will realise that we remember usually the best / worst experience of the vacation and then how the vacation ended, completely forgetting the rest of the duration. This term is also called as duration neglect. So, to create better memories for your lifetime, you may reduce the number of days of your vacation but ensure that you have the thrillist adventure possible and wind it up with a great last day. Facts do not cease to exist, either because they are unpleasant or because they are ignored. Noble intentions should be checked periodically against results. Accounting numbers are the language of business and as such are of enormous help to anyone evaluating the worth of a business and tracking its progress. However, accounting is but an aid to business thinking, never a substitute for it. Bad terminology is the enemy of good thinking. Managers that always promise to ‘make the numbers’ will at some point be tempted to make up the numbers. The intellect should be the servant of the heart, but not its slave It's a good idea to review past mistakes before committing new ones. (4) Ten thousand hours is an enormous amount of time. You cannot do it all alone. You will need lot of encouragement, support and you cannot be doing a part time job to make your ends meet, because you will just not be be left with enough time everyday to hit 10,000 hours of practice. (5) IQ matters but only up to a point. Beyond that, its your attitude. It is just like in a basketball game, height matters but that's just up to a point. (6) No one, whether rock stars, professional sportsmen, billionaires, and not even geniuses - make it alone. They need guidance and support at the right age. Good parenting, great environment is key in producing legends. (7) When you accept a salary cheque, it basically boils down to what you feel is right vs what you can do to receive the next paycheck (8) the opportunities you are presented with for success are not only dependent on your inner qualities, your parenting but also the time you were born in this world.
