Three strong women taking care of whatever life throws at them. One - Lucinda - is a Tower Witch whose life is about to head in an unexpected new direction. Another - Magda - is the captain of an airship who can never go home again. And as for the third, Ascara is the head of security on-board Magda's vessel. With plenty of steampunk atmosphere and a plot laced with magic and excitement, Round creates a captivating story that has me eager to finish the series. And just to make it extra fun she's created just a hint of sexual attraction between Lucinda and BOTH of the other women so the reader can't help but wonder what could happen as the story progresses!...more

It's another thing when the author can leave you on the edge of your seat waiting for the next book in the series. River K. Scott has proven to have mastered that skill! Book after book in this series, I find myself at the end thinking "Wait! It can't end there! What about . . . ?" And she's done it again. There's more to what is going on than Emily is being told and there are things happening to her that she doesn't understand and isn't sure if she should mention to her Praeses. And will things between her and Tad ever stop being awkward? This series has sealed its place as one of my favorites in the Urban Fantasy landscape and I'm waiting rather impatiently to see what happens next!

In the first three books, Blackwood did a beautiful job creating characters that I came to love but who I still didn't know much about. We got a BIG surprise about Shade - the leader of the Assassin's Guild - earlier in the series and book 3 revealed some things about Storm that left readers with MANY questions. And in this book, we get all sorts of new information about our favorite leading lady although we still have questions to answer when the story is over - and I'm thinking there is a book 5 coming at some point?!
When I TRULY fall in love with a series I develop this love/hate relationship with the last book because I don't want to say goodbye to the story and the characters for good. I'm DREADING the final installment in Storm's story. But it looks like I don't have to say goodby quite yet! ...more

Will my fave's voice get lost in the mix? Let me reassure all Ashley McLeo fans . . . there is no reason to worry. McLeo's "voice" is definitely present but there's a little something . . . extra there as well that must be the influence of Kelly N. Jane. (So have I found another new author to love? It's worth exploring!)
Rone is used to giving orders and having them followed without question. Violet is used to taking care of herself AND her mother - who is institutionalized - and there's no way she's going to follow some stranger's orders just because he claims to be a prince!
But Violet can't deny that Rone is helping answer questions that have plagued her all of her life. And maybe . . . just maybe . . . he can help her figure out what happens next. If they can both survive, that is!...more

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. But I'm definitely glad I picked it up! It's almost "atmospheric", making you feel things for and about the characters rather than relying on fast-paced action to keep the reader's attention. I was cheering for Remmy pretty much from the first page. What I loved most is that none of the characters are portrayed as being flawless. The author lets us see the good, the bad, and the questionable. Definitely worth the read. The only thing that kept it from being a 5-star? I would have liked a bit more dialogue. I think I would have connected to the characters much more quickly....more

I was drawn in by the cover and when the synopsis mentioned the Legend of King Arthur . . . I knew I HAD to own this book.
The author described this book as "black girl magic meets King Arthur" and that is the perfect quick explanation.
Bree discovers that King Arthur and his knights were much more than the stuff of stories and legends. She meets their descendants and discovers that their spirits could actually come back. They weren't just fighting for their land. They were fighting demons. And when humankind is in danger, Arthur will call his Scion and the Round Table will once again defend the Onceborns from supernatural evil.
What really fascinated me is the fact that this is Deonn's debut novel but it DOES NOT read like a debut. The plot, the writing, the imagery . . . this book has all the markings of a seasoned writer simply doing what she does best. And plot twist?! HOLY BUCKETS THE PLOT TWIST!!!! It's tough to surprise me with a plot twist but this was brilliant and a total surprise!
The sequel is due out sometime in 2021. I just hope I can hold out till it's available! ...more
