On the one hand, the audiobook performances were AMAZING, almost enough for me to keep buying the audiobooks. I finished it, just to say that it was done, but I really wish I hadn't. If you were on the fence with the first book in the duet, I don't recommend this one. It's almost all torture, rape, emotional and physical abuse, murder, etc. and very little else.
I failed to see the difference between how Zade treated Addie and how her abusers treated her, despite her reception to the treatment. Abuse is abuse, regardless of if your abuser "loves" you. I read the CWs, but they really don't prepare you for the messed up dynamics of these characters....more

I mean, it was disturbing, sure, but I don't think that's why people are supposed to like it? The writing was good and the additional mystery was entertaining. I didn't find the book "sexy" at all, but that's a personal preference thing, as I don't like abuse between the protagonists in my romances. It ended on a cliffhanger, so of course I had to get the next book just to find out who the villain was. (If you're on the fence with this book, I don't recommend the second in the duet. Because all physical copies in my area were sold out, I went with the audiobook for this one, and I sadly wouldn't recommend it. The narration was awful. I'm sorry, but the narrator ought to have waited until they weren't sick before they began narration. The constant sniffling, mouth noises, and stuffy nose was both gross and distracting.

I'm not sure that I'm in the right brain space for it at the moment. I found myself nitpicking little things, and that's not how I want to read it.
One thing that *actually* bothered me, though, was that in the print edition (the illustrated paperback that I have), the title along the spine is facing the wrong way. Every book on my shelves, whether they be fiction or research texts have the spine facing one way, and this one is the opposite.

I didn't understand the "romance". There was no build-up, no description of the characters' emotions, so I had no idea why a tortured prisoner would leap into bed with a stranger that paid for time with him--and enjoy it. Additionally, why would the agent from the bureau be interested in being intimate with someone that was so clearly just tortured, instead of simply feeling pity or sorrow? No reason, no internal dialogue leading up to this encounter explained in detail why either of these characters would behave so contrary to what would be expected, and it bothered me....more
