Haven't read Kempe, but didn't she end up getting dragged out of churches because her weeping and wailing disturbed everybody else?
Kalliope wrote: "(She) of Norwich should form a book club with George Eliot, Fernán Caballero and Teresa de Avila."
Why George Elliot?
Ops, sorry for the spelling...
I meant all those women writers who (for various reasons) are known by the name of a man. Fernán Caballero is another one (Cecilia Böhl de Faber). And Teresa just for her visions...

Apparently Julian was actually her name, maybe her parents didn't like Julia, who knows!
Caroline wrote: "I did like your penultimate paragraph. What amazing imagery....and so comforting."
I love the transition from the hazelnut universe - presumably God's perspective, and then Julian's sense of her own soul as this huge, infinite space (well, I wonder how she described it in her own words)
Yes indeed....and the thirst of God and Christ as well, for human beings. It is all wonderfully evocative.
How interesting to re-read this excellent review again. This time I was struck by your description of Anchorites. Am off now to google for more information....

possibly because it wasn't there previously?

Thanks, it is an interesting read - much of the imagery was very unconventional to me
Scarlett wrote: "This was truly a mesmerizing read, Jan-Maat, only I couldn't help wondering throughout the whole review, what you would do if your skin actually was the exact tile read colour... :)"
well the last time my skin was tile red in colour I was spending a lot of time trying to soothe my sun burn

you have visions of the devil Madame?
I was reading a paperback a couple of weeks ago that disintegrated as I read it. Every time I finished one segment I would have to work my way through the others, laid out on the table, to see what was next. It was surprisingly disconcerting.

Hm, perhaps Julian's Devil was also only a little bit sunburnt (?)... meaning that I truly enjoyed your review!
