Ally The brand new group - Bright Young Things - is nominating books to read in January & Franny and Zooey is among them. Its the perfect place to discuss your favourite books and authors from the early 20th Century, why not take a look...

Alison Diem I agree with you completely, that public school has a way of ruining books and authors. I, too, hate Dickens.

I think people have to be in a place where they are "ready" for certain things- that they are open enough to accept what they are reading, educated enough that they can question and debate in their own minds while not taking everything at face value and experienced enough in the world that they can actually understand what these authors are trying to say.

Anyway, I was lucky enough to have found Salinger outside of school and have been able to enjoy him more because I was never forced to read him work or dissect it like a frog in biology.
