Robin & Fo Aaaand do you like it :) ?

message 2: by Natalie (new)

Natalie Monroe Sadly, no, not really. The story is good but I don't like the love triangle.

message 3: by Robin & Fo (new)

Robin & Fo Aw, that's a shame...

I know, it is a travesty that this protagonist is called a 'kick-ass heroine'. I could kick her ass! Just hand her a bag of poisoned candy and...

message 6: by Aqsa (last edited Dec 22, 2013 12:44PM) (new)

Aqsa My daily and forever routine is being a lazy butt and sitting in front of my laptop all day and sweetheart, pretty sure I could kick her good fo' nothing ass.

And I think more than her not living up to the "oh-so-amazing and fearful assassin in all of the land" title, it was even more of her being so fucking cocky and arrogant about it and then doing nothing. Like, oh if you try to talk to me I'll rip your heart out because you know who I am.. When really she was fucking snoring her ass off when people would be banging on her doors to get up.

Plus, if you're an assassin, I get that you're proud of who and what you are and everything you've accomplished and yes, you can be egoistic at times and usually that pride drives you to stand tall and be like, "yes this is who i am, don't mess with me." and if someone shuts you off from the world you'd feel devastated-- even mad. And you'd think someone working in a mine for so long would feel that anger at being locked away and want vengeance or even some retribution of some sorts, but nope! Celeana doesn't give a fuck, whoops!
She just likes dresses and candies and likes to remind herself how fucking beautiful she is and how round and perfect her boobs use to look -- like, please, I don't care if they looked like fucking rhombuses, I doubt that's the first thing the best assassin in the land would even think about after getting let out of a prison.

Just, ugh. Idek man, she ruined it for me.

I totally agree. She's all talk and no walk.

message 8: by Anushka (new)

Anushka LOL, that's an awesome review. I've heard too much hype about this book but honestly? Even the blurb made me run away from it.

message 10: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ Omg, you took the words right out of my mouth. XD Calaena (what kind of name is that, anyway) was a total Mary Sue and she annoyed the crap out of me. It seriously felt like the author went through a list of classic Mary Sue traits and used them all in one character. (Besides the ones you mentioned, she can also play the piano perfectly ... *Eyeroll*) And I agree––she was always bragging about how great an assassin she is and ... did not prove it.

I also couldn't tell Dorian and Chaol apart for like the whole first half of the book ... and the name Dorian also reminded me of Dorian Gray, haha.

Also, I appreciate all the A:TLA gifs you used. And the illustration of "Calaena's world" at the end made me crack up. XD So yeah, brilliant review!

I honestly think Caleana is one of the better names in YA, compared with names like Nora Dearly and American Singer.

message 13: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ @Natalie - You're welcome!

@Savina - Haha! That's true, there are worse character names out there. I just get irritated by unpronounceable/made-up names ... I mean, couldn't her name have just been Selena or something? XD

message 14: by Savina (new)

Savina M. @Brigid-No, Selena's too plain! How can the author prove that the heroine is a special snowflake if she has a plain name?

message 15: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ Ahhh right, right. :P

message 16: by Reader-ramble (last edited Jul 13, 2014 06:09AM) (new)

Reader-ramble I'm reading this right now, and this is totally who I feel. I probably shouldn't have done a chapter by chapter of it, but it's the best practice I'm going to get before I do CP2.

KL (Cat) Utterly brilliant review! (sidenote: ...Lolita?)

message 22: by Natalie (new)

Natalie Monroe Cat wrote: "Utterly brilliant review! (sidenote: ...Lolita?)"

Thank you! Lolita is a book about a pedophile who lusts/falls in love (depending on how you interpret it) after a child called Lolita. Before it used to be a pretty popular name, but since the publication of Lolita, popularity plummeted because no parent wants their kid to be named after a pedobear's object of affection. :P

message 23: by Tika (new)

Tika Do you do official reviews? 'Cause you're funny and I had a better time reading this than the story.

Thanks so much for saying that! I review nearly every book I read now, so if you friend me or follow my reviews, you can be privy to the random, snarky world that is my brain. :P

message 25: by Martyn (new)

Martyn Stanley Alyxx sold me on this one. I might give it a go anyway. I could at least try the first one!

Aye. It's Halima. Natalie. Stop it. Seriously. A zillion people told me how good this book was. And you effing changed it. Girl, stahp reviews. Start writing stories. I love the way you write. Makes me all twisty-emotioney.

YES, AMEN TO THIS.

message 30: by Merna (last edited Dec 02, 2014 02:46AM) (new)

Merna Love the review! I wish I can read a book similar in some aspects to the show Avatar. I finished the show two weeks ago, and I have pretty big hangover. Everything I read is meh. I was thinking maybe the series Mistborn might be similar. I now know that Throne of Glass is not similar in any aspects thanks to your review.

Have you watched its sequel Legend of Korra? It's not as good as ATLA, imo, but still worth watching.

message 32: by Merna (new)

Merna I watched the first season and near the end of it, I felt it was heading in a good direction, but I I'm not enjoying the beginning of season 2.

Alienor ✘ French Frowner ✘ LMAO! Loved your review, I haven't read it yet but that's interesting to find another view on it.. Also, the candy scene? Awesomeballs - reminds me of those horror movies' characters we can't stop to warn LOUD "Noooo just don't do that, no not here" >.<

Exactly! How can a hardened assassin be so stupid?

message 35: by Rache (new)

Rache Celaena's world XD
I haven't read this yet, but I've heard so many great things it was weird to read your review haha. Still, hilarious review!

message 37: by La Coccinelle (new)

La Coccinelle The candy incident had me laughing. You should not be able to take out the world's greatest assassin with a bag of sweets. (I kind of wish someone had tried, though; that might have made the book a little more exciting.)

message 38: by Upetha (new)

Upetha She's only 18 and has spent a year in Endoiver the harsh conditions almost killed her. What can you expect her. I know you probably thought she was invincible and heartless well sorry to disappoint you since you figured out she's not invincible or heartless since she spent a year in death mine for crying out loud

Wouldn't it? It'd teach her not to take candy from strangers at the very least. Childhood rule number one.

I expect her to act like a fucking assassin, not a dimwitted nincompoop who can't kill a fly to save her life. Nearly dying at a concentration camp should teach her some self-preservation, no?

Nemo (The Moonlight Library) Everyone keeps telling me how good the sequels are so I'm trying, really trying, going through the prequel, and it's just been another adventure with Celaena going on about how beautiful she is, how dangerous she is, how easy it would be to kill someone - and no killing.

Sounds like Calaena, alright.

Books wrote: "Love this review! I haven't read Throne of Glass yet so I'm a bit wary to start it. I have heard that it gets better though."

I've heard the same, too. But the first left a bad taste in my mouth and I don't think I can stand any more of perfect Calaena and her boy dilemma.

Christopher I was adding assassin books to my 'to-read' list a couple of days ago and almost added this one because some people said it was wonderful. I forget what held my finger from clicking 'Want to Read', but everything you mention are things that infuriate me about protagonists. Thanks for confirming that was a good decision.

message 49: by Isabel (new)

Isabel Murillo-ordoñez hahaha I laught so hard at the end !! so true I thought the same but I guess this is a book for teens and I mean really teens like 12. I really wanted for her to kill somebody! I don't dislike her as a character but c'mon for someone that is an assassin she should be cold blooded or at least a good actress pretending to be sweet.End of rant.
