Henry Martin Gabriel, You should try to read his other works: Proud Beggars; The Lazy ones; The house of certain death.
BTW, Cossery is not French, he was Egyptian. He moved to France and lived in a hotel until his death. A very interesting writer, with a very unique style. His descriptive language is spectacular, especially in Proud Beggars. Regarding the 'women' part of your review, you have to take into account the era and location of his stories.
