Well, I did quite like the book. But the film is a masterpiece, and it just wouldn't be reasonable to say that of Clarke's novel, even if it is perfectly competent.

No, hang on. That isn't what I meant to say at all. What I MEANT to say is that this movie and I am supposing this book are SO not feminist. I mean, what is it with these guys? There is no female robot, let along a strong female robot who would make a good role model for girls thinking of becoming robots. Why SHOULD the baddie be a boy? It's no wonder girls are so good all the time. They aren't given enough appropriate role models for alternative ways of approaching the world. Sexist stereotyping if ever I saw it. There is a bit part for one girl doctor. Ha.
The girls, if you look at the list of characters are all 'stewardesses', if you can stretch a point and call stewardesses characters.
So, why couldn't the girls be upgraded to stewards? And if you are going to tell me that stewardesses are equal to stewards, then why couldn't the movie have apesses? I mean, it's got all these apes? How sexist is that? And why aren't there any astronautesses?
I am thinking here that only a real misogynist could think this was a good film. Unless you are going to argue that it is set in its period and that it is no more than an accurate reflection of society at the time of the setting of the book/movie. Go on. I dare you.

You are so wrong. One of the crew members who's killed by HAL is a strong, vibrant female astronaut who was due to be thawed out when they got to Jupiter. Unfortunately, you only ever see her covered in ice in her suspended animation coffin, so you'll have to take my word for it, but would I lie to you?

I agree with Manny, this movie is a masterpiece, unfortunately at home no one wants to sit with me to watch it. Everybody suddenly disappear! However I do need to read the book! Have you read the entire collection?
