Zenny You wrote "unfortunately I ended up not finding it as enjoyable as I had hoped." I had the same experience over 30 years ago. However, I had read the original a few years before that. Prodded by a friend I ended up producing a new English translation. It won't solve your or anybody else's problem of not having "the cultural context". Edita Birschbach The problem might be the translation. I read the book in Czech and Hasek's language is hilarious.
