Kelly (and the Book Boar) Hey good news. Now that you've read one Amy Tan book you never have to read another 'cause they are like carbon copies ; )

Carmen Wow! You are going to China? You will have a great time, I'm sure. :)

Ah, so that's the case? Thanks for the warning, Kelly!

Well, it's not set in stone just yet. However, my brother does speak the language decently enough now, so I'd have an adequate guide, which is nice to have in a foreign country with a complicated language.

Catherine Although Amy Tan has similar themes in her novels, I don't think it's fair to say they're carbon copies. I've read quite a few and enjoyed them all...although her latest one doesn't appeal to me at all.

Fair enough. Thanks, C-diggity! (Hope you don't mind me calling you C-diggity now?)

Catherine C-diggity, eh? That's a new one, but I kinda like it.

Natalie And the passing guy in the white shirt is staring, too!

Jason Koivu But he's got more of a "what the?" look on his face.

Katie I visited my sister who lives in China a couple of years ago, and did the same thing: read lots of books to get a feel for the background of a culture I knew nothing about. A favorite, if you want a humorous look at things is "Lost on Planet China" by J. Maarten Troost. Enjoy your trip, whenever that may be! We had an amazing time!

I've read a Troost book before and enjoyed it, so maybe I'll give this one a go. Thanks for the comments and recommendation, Katie!

Mer Love the headline, the pic and agree with your review. I read it quite a few years ago, and it left a very positive impression on me. I think this is her best book. For old China, ever read any Pearl Buck?

No one is laughing at the man in the dress. Re-read the comments if you doubt it.

This comment is transphobic. This is why we can't have nice things.
