Angela M Elyse, knowing that this was based on real events made this more meaningful for me as well. A beautiful review for a beautiful story!

Esil So glad you loved this beautiful novel. I’m sure it worked well as an audio.

message 5: by Elyse (new)

Elyse Walters Hi Dorie... thanks ... and enjoy! Hope you’re feeling well too

Elyse Walters Hi Angela ... me too ... and right now with the horrible toxic algae along the southern coast - killing off all our fish - this story hits home in another way too.

The story of the children were priceless- but the ‘real’ TRUE tragedy that so many people lived through - AND thinking of fish today being killed off by toxic materials just ‘all’ is heartbreaking.
xo

Elyse Walters Thanks BERN...
A side note: ANY opportunity to continue learning tidbits of Canadian history these days are of interest to me -
I don’t want to ‘race’ through any crash courses — but little by little - I’m kinda interested in ‘everything Canada’...
Our younger daughter who is now in the process of becoming a citizen herself. So thanks for not being bored with me including it. Xoxo

Elyse Walters Hi Esil ... thank you! I did enjoy it. ...
and the Audio definitely worked nicely for me. Helpful - supportive and really ‘lovely’. 🐟

Jennifer ~ TarHeelReader Lovely review, Elyse! That’s great to know about the audio because I think I’d like to listen to this one at some point even though I loved reading it as well. It would be pretty to hear those sentences. Xoxo ♥️

Hi Felicia -- I never thought I'd get started -- but once I did -- I find its great company when I'm alone during the week -cleaning-gardening-cooking - (I have an Airbnb room to often clean - do wash - and yard work --I wear a fanny belt with my iphone in it and have an Audiobook playing while I work). And when I'm cooking, or relaxing in our warm pool (a treat between cleaning) -- the Audiobook is great company! Its important to find books that hold your interest.
I have sent about a hundred 'back' over the years. (I can save you from some bad ones) -
so.....
If you want any help or suggestions -- let me know. As anyone who has been listening for some time now -- they will 'all' tell you that 'each' year -- (even the last couple of years) -- the quality keeps improving!!!

Hi Karen -- Do 'you' enjoy Audiobooks? Perhaps you might this story better in another format? I can often tell --that some books I 'must' read (the Audiobook just won't work) --
Other books -- like this one -'kept' me interested --
I was aware that some of the descriptions would have had me drifting off if I were reading it -- but the woman who was hired to read this book had a talent --she knew how to hold our attention...(and I doubt it was just me) ....

We know when a person has that pizzazz for speaking --(she had it) --she had the 'youthful' sound needed for this story too.
but ............then again....maybe all YOU want to know --'is' the history -- and for that....you don't need to read about The Conner family.
I can understand -- either way!!

Hi Paula -- Thank you. Given where you live -- has there been any problems with the fish? With Toxic waste into the water?
Its terrible right now in Calif. --the southern coast.
And has been in Florida for some time --
When I read this story -- I couldn't help but think these 'fishy' problems continue and continue all over the world.

As for this story itself --it had a unique quality -- and was really lovely -sad --but also beautiful.

We do have some problems on the East Coast with toxins in the fish, Elyse. They always close down the clam beds for awhile and call it “red tide”. Sorry to hear it is so bad in southern Calif. it’s such a shame!

Your book sounds so wonderful. Sad, but Good!

Megan Terrific review, Elyse !! I’m excited to read this book !!!

message 25: by Ana (new)

Ana Veciana-Suarez Thank you for providing the history!! I finished this recently and enjoyed the book tremendously, but knowing more about what inspired the story adds a whole other layer. BTW, this is the third book set in Newfoundland that I've loved. (Shipping News and Sweetland are the other two.) I wonder what it is about that area that inspires such lyrical writing.

Renuka Fernando Elyse I’ve just finished the audio book . What a beautiful voice she has and such a magical tale . Do you have any other suggestions of audiobooks ? Ren
