Elyse (retired from reviewing/semi hiatus) Walters I soooo enjoyed that, Glenn!!!!! Thanks!!!!

Tooter Loved this review Glenn!

Bianca 5-star review. It's on hold at the library. I have a horrible reading slump, I can do with some LOLs. I personally think it's much more difficult to make people laugh than to make people cry, so it's nice to see a humorous book being recognised. Here's hoping I'll find it funny.

Glenn Sumi Thanks, Elyse! I think yours was one of the first reviews I read of this very funny and moving book!

Thanks, Tooter! Glad you enjoyed. It was a lot of fun to write. (And, in typical neurotic writer fashion, I'm about to edit it...)

Nooooo, it's perfect! (typical neurotic non-writer fashion).

Haha! Whew. Thanks, Tooter! Hope you get to read the book. It's a lot of fun, especially for real book lovers.

Bianca: Ugh. Reading slumps are the worst. In the past, I've often got out of them by reading outside genres I usually read. Hope you get over it! Thanks for the comment. And you're right! I believe it's harder to make people laugh than cry.

Larry H What a terrific review, Glenn! I may have liked this slightly more than the book itself! :)

message 12: by Julie (new)

Julie I had fun reading this, Glenn. Truly. Is Less the most recent Pulitzer winner for fiction?

message 13: by Glenn (last edited May 11, 2018 08:22AM) (new)

Glenn Sumi Thanks, Julie! Yup. Just received the award maybe a month ago...

message 14: by Laysee (new)

Laysee Brilliant review format, Glenn. Great fun to read! Loved it.

Kevin Ansbro Cold shower for Mr Sumi!
Glenn. Ooh, I rather enjoyed watching you flirt openly with a fictional character.
I’m going to write about a fictional room, so you can take this further. ; )

Karen Fantastic Glenn!! Wow!

Haha! Oh you are an observant reader/writer, aren't you?! Hehe. And I *just* got your room reference. ("Get a room!")

Glenn Sumi Karen wrote: "Fantastic Glenn!! Wow!"

Thanks, Karen! Hope you get to the book itself. Lots of fun. Honestly, was wavering between a 4 and 5, but then I thought of how much the book made me laugh (and occasionally cry) and so rounded up.

Cheri Such a fantastic review, Glenn!

Glenn Sumi LeAnne wrote: "What a romp! Count me in - sounds like Less is ‘more!’"

LeAnne: HA! Believe it or not, I was thinking of "Less is more" as a headline to my article. I'm sure some editor has used it. We're in good company! Hope you enjoy the book. I know some readers have found it a little plot-less and navel-gazing, and I admit the middle meandered a little for me, but it's still a super fun book with a deceptively simple surface. A lot's going on underneath...

Thanks, Cheri! I think avid Goodreaders like you will enjoy it. Anyone who reads too much, has gone to half a dozen literary readings, keeps up with literary awards... there are MANY literary jokes. But a really warm beating heart, too.

Matthew Quann Awesome review, Glenn! This is up next for me.

message 30: by Glenn (new)

Glenn Sumi Matthew wrote: "Awesome review, Glenn! This is up next for me."

Thanks, Matthew! Hope you like it. It's not the most serious or weighty Pulitzer Prize winner, but that shouldn't be held against it. Comedy's very hard to pull off. It's also made me very curious about Greer's backlist titles.

message 31: by Gerhard (new)

Gerhard Wonderful review of a truly indelible book. I still smile thinking about the joy and pathos of reading it.

Glenn Sumi Gerhard wrote: "Wonderful review of a truly indelible book. I still smile thinking about the joy and pathos of reading it."

Gerhard: Thanks so much! I just read your lovely review. You're so right. "Joy" and "pathos" are perfect words to describe the experience of reading it.

message 33: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Quann Man, Glenn, you killed this review format! Spot on!

message 34: by Glenn (new)

Glenn Sumi Thanks, Matthew! Glad you liked the book! I agree about the Morocco chapter. The book really came together for me then.

message 39: by Toni (new)

Toni Well Glenn, you certainly get the Pulitzer for this review. Incredible, fascinating and intriguing. Now I really want to read this book. You’ve brought this book to life, literally and figuratively! Thanks!

message 40: by Glenn (new)

Glenn Sumi Aw thanks, Toni! I have a feeling you will appreciate the book and find it funny and moving.

Robin Glenn, I know I enjoyed reading your review the first time, but liked it even more after reading the book! I just adore the passage you quoted. I also thought about "Eat, Pray, Love" when reading this - almost impossible not to - but thankfully, this book didn't have the manufactured cheesiness of that book.

message 45: by Toni (new)

Toni Glenn, you’re right! Reading it now, delightful, smart and funny!

message 46: by Glenn (new)

Glenn Sumi Aww thanks Toni! Can’t wait to read your review.

message 47: by Peter (new)

Peter Boyle Glenn, this is one of the cleverest reviews I have read in a long time. Well done!

message 48: by Glenn (new)

Glenn Sumi Peter: Wow. Thank you for that! It was a lot of fun to write. Glad you enjoyed the novel too. I’m looking forward to reading Greer’s earlier books.

message 49: by Julie (new)

Julie Ehlers Okay, now I'm totally shipping you and Arthur Less. :) Great review, and I agree with all of it. Particularly appreciate your mentioning the flashbacks--I usually hate flashbacks but here they worked so well. I think keeping them vivid and short and weaving them in with the main narrative was much more effective than the way they usually bring the story to a screeching halt.

message 50: by Glenn (new)

Glenn Sumi Julie: Haha - thanks! Yes! Flashbacks can be so awkward, but he handled them so gracefully. This book felt like a love letter to serious readers. So many little in jokes. And what a beating heart, too...
