♥ Sandi ❣	Good review Diane, this is on my TBR list - I usually like Frazier.

Diane Barnes This book is worth reading for the history of a little known woman in history, overshadowed by her not very admirable husband. I liked it, but never really connected on an emotional level.

Angela M I don’t feel so badly that I was declined an Arc now ! I loved Cold Mountain and his other books and may still read this some time. Great review, Diane .

message 4: by Jen (new)

Jen Nothing worse than a frustrating story! I still need to read Cold Mountain. Nice review, Diane

message 5: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Metcalf Well, I'm not sure I'd be in a hurry to read this one even though I liked your review....very fair as always. I've had Cold Mountain sitting on my bookshelf here waiting to be read for a couple of years now. Just seeing Angela's comment has made me think I should hurry up and read it.

Diane S ☔ Thank you, Sandi, Angela, Jen and Sharon. Cold Mountain for me is still his best.

Diane, I agree about Varina, did not know anything about her before reading this. I did connect though several times while they were on the road.

Amalia Gavea Βeautiful review, Diane! I have this one (need to start it soon) but I doubt it will stand up to Nightwoods or Cold Mountain.

message 8: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Cold Mountain is my favorite too , Diane.

message 9: by Judy (new)

Judy Frazier will be here in Winston-Salem, NC soon for a book-signing. I hope to hear him talk about this book. It would be really hard to have another that lived up to Cold Mountain though.

Diane S ☔ Thank you, Amalia and Mackey. Mine too, Angela.

Judy, wonderful opportunity if you get to hear him talk. Let me know what he says about this book.

Diane S ☔ Thanks much, Sue.

Cheri I've only read his 'Cold Mountain,' which I loved (along with others), but I haven't seen any glowing reviews for this. I 'wished' for this, but am not counting on getting an ARC of this. Terrific review, Diane, wish it had been a better read for you.

message 15: by DeAnn (new)

DeAnn Thanks for this review Diane. I was excited to see Charles Frazier out with a new Civil War book, but good to know this one isn't amazing. I'm putting it in my "someday" pile.

message 16: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ Thanks, Cheri. I do think it is worth reading. Varina is quite a feisty woman and as Diane said, little has been written about her.

Thanks, DeAnn. Hope you do read, I too have a "someday pile" lol.

Jennifer ~ TarHeelReader Wonderful review, Diane. I am with DeAnn- I want to read it but am glad to know I don’t have to be in a rush!

Diane S ☔ Thanks, Jan.

message 23: by Victoria (new)

Victoria I was just considering this one earlier today, but with several frustrating books in the recent past, I think I'll skip. Thank you for your service! 😉

message 24: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ Too funny Victoria, glad I could help!

message 25: by Elyse (new)

Elyse Walters Diane... I’ve read some of this book - I have it from the library... but am enjoying so many other books more - I doubt I’ll finish it before the book is due. - Was half way planning on letting this one go. ...
Your review makes it even easier to do so. lol.
But..., I did just finish another book during the Civil War ...that I loved: “My Name is Mary Sutter”
It was sooo good!!!

message 26: by Truman32 (new)

Truman32 Great review, though I enjoyed it a little more than you did!I agree that the flight from Richmond was the strongest part of the story.

message 27: by Sara (new)

Sara I thought the strange bouncing was Frazier's way of letting Varina see it in retrospect, which would have been quite different from the moment of experience, but I get your frustration. Like you, I loved the section where they were traveling through the decimated South.
