Sandy I totally agree with your review. Very well said!
The two main character's personalities are annoying and no matter how you slice it- cheating on somebody is not right.
Thanks for the great review!

message 2: by arianna (new)

arianna I'm also glad that someone hit on the fact of people outgrowing each other. Just like the main character outgrew Annalise but continued to be long distance friends with her i can't understand why her friendship with Darcy didn't take the same route. I can't imagine staying around someone who i don't want to spend time with.

message 3: by Brenda (new)

Brenda oh, I so agree.... Rachel was only slightly less an idiot at the end, and I mean only slightly. So much for character development and transformation.

message 4: by Kat (new)

Kat I completely agree. I feel like the author just gave up. She could have made it about morals and values and instead she just tried to equal out the bad between the 2 characters. Ugh.

message 5: by Noha (new)

Noha Essam God,I was searching for a review like this for a looooooong time! all people say "omg ..darcy is such a bad character" BUT NO they are BOTH mean and WRONG,I think the one who is really stupid is Dex .. I am team Ethan..! ..One more thing:I think that the author just wanted it to be sympathetic for Rachel and disgusted with Darcy But I ended up hating both!

message 7: by Savetra (new)

Savetra I agree with u guys! They should have grown apart a lot sooner. I was sick of Rachel within the first couple of chapters, but I really thought she was a Bitch @ the baby shower when she described the other ladies. She says that none of them where anything in high school but their "mediocrity no longer mattered" because they are only wives and mothers. This bothered me because Rachel wanted exactly what they had- happiness and love. Only she wanted it with Dex. I also think she needed Ethan and he did her a big favor.

message 8: by Noha (new)

Noha Essam Yes,Ur absolutely right Savetra!

message 9: by Catherine (new)

Catherine I disagree...I think friendship is precious...and while Darcy was pushy and bitchy..everyone knows someone like that. there are people like that in every walk of life. I am not condoning this, I am just saying you are not being entirely fair. I mean does every one of your friends get along, or do some of them maybe feel that one or another may be just a s pushy as Darcy...but because you don't see it like that, you continue to remain friends with them?

message 10: by Carielle (new)

Carielle "Come one now, no matter how you color it, it's never okay." Thank you! I was shocked so many women seem to like Rachel!

message 11: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Carielle wrote: ""Come one now, no matter how you color it, it's never okay." Thank you! I was shocked so many women seem to like Rachel!"

I liked Darcy in the beginning, anf then didn't like her for a while...then later...she kind of grew on me...when she started to take responsibility for her own actions, and not blame everyone else.
however, you can't fault people for being friends. friendship is precious, and as I said before...there are people like this in every walk of life...

message 12: by Carielle (new)

Carielle I don't fault them for being friends, I fault them for having such poor morals that they would both jeopardize such a long friendship.
And there are people like this out there, but thank God my good friends and I aren't. I literally tried to imagine this happening with us and truly just could not. The cattiness, the lying, the HOOKING UP WITH HER FIANCE, and worst of all, the justifying, ugh it was just gross.

message 13: by Crystal (new)

Crystal I couldn't agree more with your review. Very well said!

message 14: by Sahar (new)

Sahar i wanted to read a review before to see if it's worth reading, not such a good idea this one ruined the story for me in one paragraph :( I stopped reading after that so hopefully I'll get something suprising and that's it's not just a surprisingly bad book!)

message 15: by Elle (new)

Elle Perfect description. Whine, whine, whine. Ugh.

message 16: by D'Arcy (new)

D'Arcy Mattis Just getting into this book. Only got it because my sister in-law gave me the one that follows.
Will have to submit my review later, however I have to disagree with your comment about friendships and it being highly unlikely they would still be friends after all these years.
My friend Natalie and I have been great friends since the fourth grade and we are 33 years old now. I live in Massachusetts and she lives back home in Oregon, while this type of long distance friendship wouldn't work for most, Nat and I have always been able to pick up right where we left off even if we haven't seen each other for a year or more. Some friendships do last forever, so for me their friendship is believable.

message 17: by D'Arcy (new)

D'Arcy Mattis I take back my last statement about a friendship like Darcy and Rachel's lasting that long. If I was friends with either of those characters someone would get bitch-slapped!

message 18: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine LaBine It's sad to read so many cynical, bitter comments about this book. Things simply don't always come easily to every person in the world, and I found this book to be raw and real. Though I, like every reader, was frustrated with Rachel's spinelessness, I feel that the frustration was an emotion that Giffin intended for the reader, only to delight the reader with the heroine's growth and willingness to step outside the box and do something bad for once that was best for her and only her.The truth is, some people don't have life figured out in their twenties, and though I may not completely relate to this character, I was celebrating her happiness by the end of the book with a mutual understanding that while what Rachel did was immoral, the story was intricately woven by the author to expose the insecurities of both women, though portrayed in very different personalities.

Catherine Jasmine wrote: "It's sad to read so many cynical, bitter comments about this book. Things simply don't always come easily to every person in the world, and I found this book to be raw and real. Though I, like ever..."

I agree with you somewhat...I loved the story...yes Rachel could be whiny, but Darcy was annoying in her own way as well....

message 20: by Laurel Ann (new)

Laurel Ann This is probably the most perfect review I've ever read.

message 21: by Chelle (new)

Chelle I agree with Traci's review. Now I know why the screenwriters changed the movie so much. They turned a terrible book into a charming story onscreen with characters who actually have consciences (unlike the characters in the original story). My advice: skip the book, watch the film.

message 22: by Valia (new)

Valia Exactly what I feel except I ended up liking Darcy especially in Something blue.Dex and Rachel were just horrible.

message 23: by Alex (new)

Alex I dont COMPLETELY dislike the story. I mean it is probable that two people who both move to NYC can remain friends over time. And there were some cracks in the foundation of their friendship to begin with because of their differences. But I think what the story is trying to say is that we can't help who we fall in love with and sometimes two people were meant to be. Racheal and Dex had slight interest in one another in the beginning but because racheal figured she didn't deserve it and always took back seat, she didn't Persue it further. She was in denial. But the feelings lingered. Sometimes there's a certain magic we have with another person. This people, is all believable. Now what's NOT believable to me is Giffins writing. I absolutely hate her choppy paragraphs and lack to describe the setting. It's always "I said, I said, I said, he said" it's just like my god woman get some creativity!!! And the movie was HORRENDOUS. Just completely butchered BOTH story lines for this and something blue. Did she even care? Or make an effort? Cause it didn't seem like it. That movie was complete crap. Her characters would of even disapproved lol.

message 24: by Alex (new)

Alex Ugh! Utterly disagree the movie was complete crap. They made a fool out of every character, took out crucial people and pretty much pitted any complexity the story happened to have.. (complexity doesn't seem to be Giffins best talent)

message 25: by Tatiana (new)

Tatiana I COMPLETELY AGREE!!!

message 26: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Ray You make an awesome point. I saw the movie, but didn't read the book, and hated it. Sounds like the two were pretty similar.

message 27: by Tammi (new)

Tammi I agree with your review..very well said.

message 28: by Lucy (new)

Lucy Agree with you. The 2 leads are sic

message 29: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Alex wrote: "I dont COMPLETELY dislike the story. I mean it is probable that two people who both move to NYC can remain friends over time. And there were some cracks in the foundation of their friendship to beg..."

I agree with you...friendship starts with a good foundation...

message 30: by Catherine (last edited Feb 05, 2013 11:21AM) (new)

Catherine sooo not true.....people can remain friends their entire lives....it has nothing to do with location, or job, or anything else. true friendships are hard to come by, so if you can say you are friends with someone you knew as achild...well then more power to you! I have friends that I have known all my life...and we remain friends to this day.

now...this is not to say that I hang out with them every day of my life.....but I cherish my friends. it just goes to show that people are so fickle...and only "keep" people around if they can further their cause.....This is NOT FRIENDSHIP!!!

Also...everyone is different....yes..Rachel was whiney...but if you read the books....you also see haw manipulative Darcy is....and yet...they remain friends....it's all about give and take....

message 31: by Juju (new)

Juju I will not be surprised if the author has slept with one of her friend's boyfriends/fiances.

message 32: by Susan (new)

Susan Tura-perna Ethan was my fav character

message 33: by Lmarisam (new)

Lmarisam Very well said. In the end I was routing for darcy. When I know the author wanted the reader to route for Rachel. Rachel and dex were both morally wrong no matter what. They also cheated first. Darcy didn't cheat until fourth of July and only because dex wasn't there. I think it's wrong for Rachel to say she misses darcy at the end. Rachel had no character build she still wanted a friendship she spoke so negatively about. I hope the second book doesn't rekindle this friendship. They only character I didn't find annoying was Ethan.

message 35: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Yup, the movie was a load of crap too.

message 36: by Amy (new)

Amy I completely agree with you! I hated how Rachel tried to justify her actions, with horrible reasons such as 'Darcy was always better and luckier than me!' it honestly makes Rachel even more unlikable because instead of complaining she could have just stopped pitying herself, try to work towards confidence instead of complaining all the time. She should have been more focused on herself instead of others. In a way she was selfish, worrying more about her happiness instead of betraying her friend. Rachel claims to be a good girl, yet she cared more for her happiness instead of the pain she caused her friend.

message 37: by Tanya (new)

Tanya Velayutham Amen to that! I'm totally disgusted with this book and I'm glad to know there are people who feel the same!

message 38: by Jaz (new)

Jaz I'm so frustrated that I am discovering these reviews now! I literally couldn't find any, and now that I have read to 27% in, I am disgusted. This book is awful. I have read some bad books in my time, but none are as bad as this. On the plus side, it's nice to see that there are others that agree with me.

message 39: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie You know, when I read this a few years ago I loved it. But now that I am reading it again my opinion has changed. I agree with you, both Darcy and Rachel are pretty shitty and would add that Dex is horrible as well. Rachel spends the entire book justifying her decision to engage in an affair with her BFF's fiancee. No matter how selfish your friend is, that is no reason to decide to do something too low. You simply STOP being friends with them. I won't even get into her weak nature and whiny nature. Darcy is selfish and annoying. No one you would want to spend a great amount of time around, let alone be friends with for 20 plus years. And Dex ... what kind of asshole starts sleeping with his fiance's BF, woos her, tells her he loves her and then says he was sorry to lead her on, WEDDING'S STILL ON!!! On second thought, these three deserve each other.

message 40: by Steph (new)

Steph B. Jones I hated this book and you summed it up for me. when her and dex go back to her place the second time she keeps thinking to herself oh I knew him first we were friends first I was like you know what he is marrying your friend; this is bullshit. you are a bad person there is no if ands or buts about that. i refrained from dropping F bombs throughout this comment but my overall opinion is fuck this book.

message 41: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin The characters have absolutely no redeem redeeming qualities. Makes it very difficult to read. Really disliked this book.

message 42: by Alberta (new)

Alberta Completely agree with you! The characters are so unlikeable I couldn't read past 20% percent. I tried to give it a chance...maybe a couple more chapters...maybe they will become likeable but nope...I just had to put it down. Regretting to have bought this book. Wish I could return it ugh...

message 43: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Lachance-Fedele Ha I was about 23% in during my vacation when I flung the book off the couch in disgust. LoL dramatic reaction yes but this book sucks! I enjoyed the movie enough to think I would like the book. Myeh Hopefully our reviews spare others lol Glad this book was a borrow

message 44: by Tiara (new)

Tiara Santana Lol clearly you all are bitter hurt woman, it's a good book and movie. This stuff does happen not saying it okay but stop acting like this isn't reality for some. I think most of you got cheated on by your lover with someone you knew that's why you all are soo butt hurt lol

message 45: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Very unlikeable characters. Usually I give up on a story like this. Not sure why I bothered to finish.

message 46: by Amy (new)

Amy I haven't even finished the book yet and totally agree! I needed a break after some serious non fiction, but seriously?! I'm embarrassed for myself!

message 47: by Vickie (new)

Vickie Yetrrrr Yes-see u then!mhm Yes-see u then!

message 48: by Sally (new)

Sally Horn I haven’t even started the book but glad I have read these comments as I am now going to knock it off my list. It sounds like the kind of book I hate and end up shouting at. Anyway glad I didn’t waste any money!

message 49: by Abi (new)

Abi Cabonita Ugh. I feel the same way.

message 50: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra Completely agree, it’s terrible!! Even how Rachel talks about most other woman made me feel like she has some sort of issues with all females deep down that even the ones she so clearly feels better than she still struggles with jealousy when it comes to them.
