Steve Great review and great examples, Drew. Algren is lionized here in Chicago. They give a literary award in his name, and regularly trot out examples of his gritty depictions. I really ought to add this to my list.

Drew Thanks! And as well he should be. If you pick this up, make sure and get the 50th anniversary critical edition. A good hundred pages of odds and ends, including a weird little Kurt Vonnegut essay/remembrance thing that I really liked.

Drew That's great to hear, and yeah, it's real good--from a time when men were men and National Book Award Winners were National Book Award Winners.
