Peter Boyle Nicely done, Michael - you make this book sound very enticing. I've read many reviews of Lab Girl but none from an actual scientist until now :-)

Thanks for the kind word and sharing your interest. The kind of obsession and sacrifice that it takes to become a success in science rings true for me from my former career. Whether that differs from dedication and climbing the ladder in the humanities is unclear (it would seem that all grad students go through their own purgatory off the beaten track from life experienced by the vast majority of people). The success at a specialized career by one with "mental illness" in this case makes for an unrepresentative perspective no less than the case of Sylvia Plath as a typical poet, but it makes for a fascinating story regardless. It would have been interesting if she had provided more examination in this dimension given the serious debate about the scientific foundation for psychiatric drugs and ECT. She obviously and reasonably did not want this to become a story about mental illness but more about harnessing an odd personality for creative accomplishment in science.

Thanks kind sir, and I bet you'd like the experience of laughter at some points and near tears at others and occasionally both at the same time.
