Tony You found what I didn't in The Sea. But then maybe it was written for you, one of those special things. Very nice review.

Gloria Thank you for this personal and lyrical review. Another book you may enjoy is "Great House" by Nicole Krauss which tackles some of these same subjects.

Marius Hancu While reading The Sea by John Banville, you may want to see my questions related to it as answered in the alt.usage.english (AUE) Usenet newsgroup. My thanks to the participating AUE members. The focus of my questions was the language: rare words, funny or original expressions, special or strange constructs — as I saw them, from within my own idiosyncrasies.

Mac Interesting review. Thanks. I hope you have or will read Ancient Light, my favorite John Banville novel.

message 14: by Cecily (new)

Cecily I'm so sorry you lost your wife. Evidently it was a few years ago, but I'm sure you still miss her.

I loved this book a few years ago, before I'd experienced any close loss myself. Reading your review, now, is timely and helpful, especially the first passage you quote. Thank you.

message 15: by Laysee (new)

Laysee Thank you, Jay, for a personal, heartfelt, moving and beautifully written review that captured the beauty in Banville's elegant prose. It is lovely to read again those lines you quoted.
