Glad I wasn't the only one who found this book a depressing, nihilistic slog. I'm amazed at all the 5-star reviews this tripe got, I guess there's no accounting for taste.
I think the most of this book is acceptable, but the ending is so trashy. Just ignore it because the Chinese contemporary fantasy novel is a little immature as a kind of new literature style.
That's my (and Konain's) point: they need to be warned by you that your review is largely a spoiler. I'm about to read the book, and I've already got a good idea how it reads, thanks to you. There's a function here on GR to mark a review a "spoiler." Please use it next time you decide to reveal the plot in a review. Thanks.
The story may need an end like this although I think it's a puzzling end as well. I don't think a good ending can be better.
I agree with your review more than the glowing 5 stars everyone is giving it. It was damn near perfect through the first 2 books and I should have left it at that.
I gave it 4*'s and meant it. But at the same time I do agree with you that ending seemed dark, rendering previous struggles of the human race kinda pointless. I just have to disagree on the final conclusion - that this wasn't a fitting end, IMHO that was the point, that all of those struggles are pointless in the grand scale of universe's lifespan -- and that's ok too.
Ha, I know! Why do we keep trusting the fate of billions to this woman? She's not the person for the job and pretty much made the 50 years Luo Ji stood off the Trisolarans into a waste.
