Tracey Great review Patty. This was sent as one of my recommendation choices in another book club but I'm a wuss and I thought it might be a bit violent for me. :(

Thanks, Dem. If I hadn't needed a book published in 2006 for a challenge, it would still be languishing on my list as well. I was ashamed that I knew so little about the Nigerian civil war, so I appreciated that push. I'm delighted to push YOU now (and look forward to your review, of course)! :)

Thanks for that, Amalia. You know, I didn't realise until about halfway through that I'd seen the movie! I still remember only some scenes, but I think I like the book better - maybe because it's still strong in my memory and maybe because I like Adichie's writing and perspective.

There is some overt violence, of course, but it's not predominantly a war story full of blood and guts. It's more the kind of constant threat of violence that was perpetrated against the Jews in the ghettos of WW2. You never know what might be coming and meanwhile, your kids are starving and you have no soap.

Thanks, Christina - this one won the 2007 Orange Prize for Fiction and some other awards, so you'd probably enjoy this one, too, although maybe "enjoy" isn't the right word, considering the subject!

Thanks, Candi. I get so lost in some good books, or I don't read them in the first place because I don't know the locale or the people. And really, that's a pretty poor excuse not to get to know the world.

I just saw (and liked) your review, Sarah. What a great resource well-written historical fiction can be, eh? This one certainly prompted me to find out a bit more.

Glad you liked it and the maps, Kathleen. I realise some people don't like pictures in reviews, but I figure sometimes they help.
