Jilly Oh, this series is so good! I hope you like it!

Alienor ✘ French Frowner ✘ OOOOH I am reading it right now too :D I think I stopped at 35% yesterday? I'm going with it, so far, but wow this is such a harsh world (and I'm not easily shocked, far from it)

message 4: by Navessa (new)

Navessa SAFETY IN NUMBERS, LADIES. Together, we can do this!

I hope so, too. o.O

I only got in a handful of pages last night before I had to stop (hubs gets pissy if I ignore him b/c BOOKS in the evenings ;), but first impressions:

1. I'm worried this is going to be like The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty, which I HATED.

2. Feel stupid for not seeing IT coming. CAPTIVE PRINCE. Duh.

Jessica ❁ ➳ Silverbow ➳ ❁ Rabid Reads-no-more Navessa wrote: "SAFETY IN NUMBERS, LADIES. Together, we can do this!"

*high fives* Sort of. But not really, b/c grabs hands and clings to it. o.O

LMAO. Don't.

And I never read this book? How was it?

So far there are scenes of violence and rape (graphic). The MC isn't okay with them, though.

message 10: by Kara-karina (new)

Kara-karina it won't be another Anne Rice I swear. As soon as they are out of the palace, there is hardly anything sexual and especially hardcore sexual. please continue, I am so curious to see what you think!:-)

message 11: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Can't wait for your review. I've seen so much hype around this series - I have to know if it's worth it!!!!!!

message 12: by Laura (new)

Laura Navello I recommend you just keep on reading past the weirdness, the tone of the series changes from book to book. It is not like the claiming of the sleeping beauty, although it does start something like it. Give the series an opportunity and hang in there!

message 13: by Alissa (new)

Alissa I read the claim of sleeping beauty, and this is nothing like it. I particularly enjoyed this book even if at first I was put off about the whole "sexual slave" thing, but well, you'll see. I'm currently reading book 3 of the series, btw ;)

Yes, ma'am! I believe you . . . mostly . . . o.O

Alright, alright! You can't all be wrong. BUT. You have to admit, that beginning . . . VERY similar.

message 17: by Keri (new)

Keri I've got this book sitting on my desk waiting to be read. I'm always iffy on m/m romances and now the kid pleasure slaves. Hmm, I'll look forward to your review.

message 18: by Lola (new)

Lola omg, I can't believe you're reading one of my favorite series of all time :O GO, JESSICA!!!!

Yeah, the thirteen-year-old kid is a pleasure slave, and he's been at it for THREE YEARS. *edvard munch face*

Jessica ❁ ➳ Silverbow ➳ ❁ Rabid Reads-no-more Lola wrote: "omg, I can't believe you're reading one of my favorite series of all time :O GO, JESSICA!!!!"

Trying, LOL. Last night, my intent was to put it down and get some distance, but somehow I ended up reading another 100 pages before I had to quit and hang out with Aaron. Laurent had just told Damen that (view spoiler), and I'm sucked in b/c INTRIGUE even though I BLOODY HATE this world. *wails*

message 21: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa J. Gah, I'm curious about this book, but I'm not a fan of lots of rape and other types of abuse. As long as it's not romanticized it's okay for me. Can't wait for your review!

Jessica ❁ ➳ Silverbow ➳ ❁ Rabid Reads-no-more Definitely not romanticized. And I'm on it! ;)

message 23: by Alissa (new)

Alissa Just do

Alienor ✘ French Frowner ✘ I completely agree with your spoiler - I thought the exact same thing. Also, Laurent is REALLY for me the heart of the story (well when I say the heart) (you see what I mean)

Oh, it bothers me. Unromanticized or not, I'm an escapist reader, so I don't like reading about it period. BUT. I MUST KNOW ALL THE THINGS.

message 28: by Lisazj1 (new)

Lisazj1 And that is one of the things that Pacat's story excels at. It's so compelling, you have to know ALL THE THINGS, as you said. :) And all those things? The average reader (meaning me) is not going to see those things coming, so the whole series is *GASP*. All the way through. The despicable things were despicable yes, but they are very much played as exactly that, despicable things done by despicable people and not the focus of the story, so I could deal. But I really do understand how you feel. :)

Thibaut Nicodème You're right, the series is all over GR and I LOVE IT.

Glad you liked the book in spite of your reservations!

Jessica ❁ ➳ Silverbow ➳ ❁ Rabid Reads-no-more I didn't love this one so much as I was well and truly caught in its trap. BUT. I loved #2. ;)

message 35: by Gabriella (new)

Gabriella THAT NERD GIRL PROBLEM. OH MY GOD. The wooooooorst though is when someone says a word to me and I don't even recognise it and go what is that? and they describe it and in my head I'm like...ohhh shit...I was pronouncing it waaaay the hell off.. But that's the struggle of learning by reading (and subsequently not spending much time socialising to hear said words, natch). Most recently that happened with Yosemite, which I always read yo-smite. :/

message 36: by Jo (new)

Jo Fantastic review as always, Jessica!

message 37: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I am currently reading it and really enjoy it! I'm curious what author mentioned it in her newsletter that you mention in your review.

message 38: by Kelly (new)

Kelly I don't have any desire to read this. I don't enjoy m/m books. But you wrote an awesome review.

message 39: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Just started #2 in this series and I legit feel like this series pulled me out of my post Morning Star depression/reading slump.

message 40: by Tandie (new)

Tandie This is WAY not for me, but great review. I can't read about children in harsh, abusive situations. It gives me a physical sick reaction. I guess that's what they mean by 'trigger'? It got much more intense after I had my own kids. I can't read kidnapping books either. The Deep End of the Ocean made me ill. I think I kept reading bcz I wanted a HEA? Those books don't have a happy ending b/c stolen childhood. Ugh.

message 41: by Tandie (new)

Tandie Also, I don't even shelve these as no-way-jose. When I read about the Marion Zimmer-Bradley thing, I just deleted everything I had. I don't want to ever see those titles & have to think about that stuff. Curiously, things happening to little boys gets me worse than anything. Obviously, I've never been a boy. Outside of personal trauma, how do we develop these triggers? I'd like to read about it. Anyone here have any book recs? Layman psychology books about it.

message 42: by Tandie (new)

Tandie Jessica - hope you don't mind me asking on your thread. Lots of book-smartos I know commented here, thought it'd be a good crowd to ask about triggers.

Anne - Books of My Heart So I appreciate the review, it's good and makes it clear I won't be reading this one.

message 44: by Eilonwy (new)

Eilonwy I love this review, Jessica! Maybe because I felt so much the same way about this book (right down to having to look all those fancy words up every two pages, which really got on my nerves after a while).

I'm not going to hold it against anyone who loves this book, but wow, it was SO not my thing. I'm looking forward to your review of Book 2, because I can't bring myself to read any further.
