So happy to see 5 stars Angela!! Looking forward to your review! 😊
I have this book. I need to get to it. So happy to see you gave it 5 stars, Angela. Wonderful review! :)
Love this review, Angela. A book that I look very forward to when the right time comes. Saw that you commented on Ron's review today as well and it was a pleasure to reread that one as well.
Sharon, thanks . After reading your review and other GR friends' reviews I knew I would love it too .
Diane, it's just a wonderful story , maybe too sentimental for some but these characters just got me !
Thanks , Esil . Such great characters! Yes, a quiet weekend and a few days without plans - more reading !
OK- I was trolling through my ebooks for the next read on the treadmill, and I think you've convinced me that this is the one (been sitting there for years)! It's this or Between Shades of Gray. Thoughts? You've read both (naturally)!
Very different books but coincidentally Ona is from Lithuania and the characters in Between Shades of Gray are deported from Lithuania to Siberia. Between Shades of Gray is more of a gut wrenching read while this one is just plain sad (yet uplifting.) So maybe depends on your mood . Not much help I know.
Ahh... decisions. Well, for the time being, I decided to read a quick 200+ page book for research, THEN it will be a toss up between these two. I enjoyed your review so much!
I have had my eye on this one for awhile, but I was afraid it might be too sappy and sentimental. But now I'm reconsidering!
Donna, it is sentimental. I'm not sure I'd say sappy. I requested an ARc of this and was turned down and decided to forget about it . But I couldn't. There were so many good reviews by GR friends, I couldn't ignore it . So I bought it and it was worth it . I feel as though I need stories like these once in a while, especially after reading some heavy duty books like Sing, Unburied, Sing that I recently read. It's not too light though !
His fascination with world records and recruiting Ona to attain any one was fun. The two of them will always warm my heart.
OK... I decided that reviewing two research books at once is too much, so I began THIS book. I'm hooked already! Lovely writing, such fabulous characterization of both the boy and Ona. Wow! Yippee. Thanks for helping me pick :-). Feels like just what I need right now, honestly, amid the other heavier books I'm reading simultaneously.
Melissa , hope you love it . Doesn't feel as heavy but it is pretty sad . I know what you mean . I fell for Ona and the boy immediately!
Jennifer, thank you . Your review was one that convinced me I really should read this and obviously I'm so glad I did !
Yes, I sense, already, that this will be a sad one. But the voices of the characters are immediately refreshing.
Fabulous review, Angela! I love the interactions between the young and the very old - this sounds wonderful :)
Candi , thanks. I'm partial to stories from the perspective of children as well as the elderly and combing them here makes for such a good story!
