Lucy of House Rojas honestly, this series doesn't deserve the hype it has had (at least not to me)

I honestly loved it when I first read it several years ago, but I don't think it's aged very well. Or maybe I just didn't know better.

Heather Codename: ♕Dutchess♕ I still have the last two books of the series to read and I don’t remember the first books really at all. It’s one of those series where it’s not really memorable and is just fluffy.

That's exactly why I'm re-reading, only I didn't get to the 4th book either. I definitly don't think it ages very well, while the plot is fun, there's not a lot of substance

Sara➽ Ink Is My Sword Nostalgia is a powerful thing, am I right?

Definitely, Sara! It's hard re-reading your favs sometimes!

message 7: by Sabrien (new)

Sabrien Abdelrahman Yeah I tried rereading but I wasn't that into it; however, I did leave my old rating. Anyways, rock that vanilla cupcake perfume, girl! 😂

message 8: by Kaylin (new)

Kaylin (The Re-Read Queen) I definitely don't think it holds up, Sabrien! Thank you! I will! 😂

message 9: by Camile (new)

Camile Souza (This Chamber of Books) Same rating I gave it, 3 stars. I wrote a yay and nay kind of review, because I had mixed feelings throughout this entire book.
I liked the world, malec and some character interactions, but damn it Clary was the cherry on top of a bunch of messy things.

message 10: by Kaylin (new)

Kaylin (The Re-Read Queen) Going to have to check out your review, Camille! It's definitely a mixed bag

message 11: by Lia (new)

Lia °booksnpenguins° OMG I relate to this review so much, you have no idea! You explained perfectly how I feel (and also what teenage me used to feel) about this book, especially about Clary.
Great review, Kaylin :)))

Hannah (Ink & Myths) Wow. I relate to this so, so much. When I was about 12/13 I loved the whole series so much. It was exactly as you wrote: I read book one in 2 days. I haven't actually dared to read the series again, because of nostalgia-reasons, but I'm pretty sure that I'd feel the same way you did and wouldn't enjoy it much nowadays!

message 13: by Svetlana (new)

Svetlana *whistles* this was a review!! I've only ever read the first book and it was ages ago. I was taken aback by the whole brother-sister thing towards the end and never did pick up the rest of the series. I never will. This was a really good honest review - loved reading your thoughts on it!!

Thank you so much, Aurélia! I feel like this book was really special to a lot of us years ago, and I'm sad it doesn't age well. :P

This is definitely one you have to read through nostalgia-glasses. These books were SO much fun when I was younger, but the substance just isn't really there. Or maybe it would have held up better? Thanks, Hannah!

message 19: by Rayna (new)

Rayna I really feel like I missed the boat on this series. 14 year old me would have loved it, but a decade later I don't think I could ever get past some of the issues this series has *shrugs*

It is definitly fun, I just don't think is has enough substance to stand against its multiple problems and character flaws.

V Bliss Wow. This. All of the thoughts and feelings I couldn't seem to put into words. I did the exact same thing; books 1-3 at around 12 or 13, never thought of them again, didn't even realize there were ever more books. I haven't, though, read them again or picked up the other books. Sometimes I feel like I should, but when I know I have so much else to read... Nah. Awesome review.

Thank you, V! :) I only ready through the first three books as well! It seemed like a conclusion to the story, and young me didn't realize there were more. Whoops

message 23: by Panderp (new)

Panderp tbh I often think it should have ended there. Books 4 & 5 we really bad and in there year I had to wait for the last one I almost decided not even to read it. In the end I'm glad I did, I really like the last one. Clary is still annoying but for once Clace isn't

Have you read any of the spin-offs? That's the main reason I'm re-reading and continuing on. I've heard The Infernal Devices is much better

message 25: by « mics » (new)

« mics » I read this book, right along with the whole TMI series and The Infernal Devices when I was 11-12, and absolutely loved it. Although I still look back at it with fondness, I do believe I wouldn’t be as thrilled as I was if I re-read it today. However, I’m taking a chance and beginning yet another of the many spinoffs, The Dark Artifices, and so far it hasn’t been as bad as I expected. Who knows, Cassie Clare has probably grown as a writer just like I’ve grown as a reader.

I've heard great things about TDA! This first book definitely hasn't aged well, but I hope the writing has matured and you enjoy the new series!

message 27: by Erica (new)

Erica C Yes. This is exactly how I feel about this series! Loved it once, read fan fiction that’s better than it now.

Oof, at sentence is painfully accurate! I've heard the rest of the series and spin-offs greatly improve, so I'm interested in continuing on!

Amariah Dixon There are some books you enjoy more when you're younger. I've had that.

Exactly! And there are books that I still love, but rereading them just doesn't work for me.

Heather Codename: ♕Dutchess♕ I honestly have no clue why I liked the first two or three books as much as I did. I tried reading the fourth book I think it was and it was just trash. I didn't even finish reading the trilogy she wrote.

I'm glad you enjoyed them, Heather! I have only read the first three, and that was forever ago, I've heard really mixed reviews about the last three... :/

I remember liking the first three but I don't remember why.

message 38: by Audrey (new)

Audrey I would’ve loved it at 13. Reading it for the first time at 40ish, it comes across as very juvenile and a knock-off of four or so fandoms.

message 39: by R.C. (new)

R.C. Mulhare I read the first two of the series and just couldn't read more of it. I love the world building, but the plots and characters had me realize I'm probably not the target audience, which isn't a bad thing.

message 40: by Kaylin (new)

Kaylin (The Re-Read Queen) @Heather: there are a lot of fun elements! Back when paranormal YA was taking off this added a lot of fun to the genre!

message 41: by Kaylin (new)

Kaylin (The Re-Read Queen) @Audrey: I definitely understand that. I often have trouble with "older" YA for similar reasons. It's fun, and something I would have enjoyed when younger, but can definitely feel off now

message 42: by Kaylin (new)

Kaylin (The Re-Read Queen) @RC: definitely not a bad thing! Honestly my same mentality when it comes to middle-grade-- I love the ideas, but I'm definitely not the target audience, and I don't relate the way I need to

message 43: by Divine (new)

Divine Anas HAHAHAHHA I have the same dilemma too! I adored it so much in high school and while I still love the Shadow hunter world freaking Clary ruins it all!!! Love your review, it encapsulates everything I'm frustrated with XD

Thank you, Mavence! I hear she gets better later in the series, but she was SO difficult here!! 😭

message 45: by Kayla (new)

Kayla Jones Hahaha yes! I recently reread Bones-Glass and I have the SAME PROBLEMS with Clary! She is genuinely terrible. If we could have the Mortal Instruments without her, I think I would enjoy it so much more because the secondary characters are fantastic (Magnus & Alec, yes please).

It always makes me feel weird when I dislike a FMC and instead find myself drawn to the side characters, but this is one series where ALL the sides characters are genuinely so much more interesting than the mains? (Give me Isabelle and Alec over Clary/Jace/Simon any day!) Clary would have been more fun to read about if the entirety narrative wasn’t trying to hard to push how LIKEABLE she is? And how she’s soooo different than others girls... and spunky! 🤪
