Caroline I felt the exact same way.

Melki Whew - I'm glad. One gets a little nervous posting a negative review of a "classic," but I don't remember ever having such an instant dislike of a book.

Greg Melki, agreed, this would have been a great novella with some editing. Three stars from me though, I thought it a solid debut.

I'm hoping to give some of Highsmith's short stories a try later this year. And I've still not seen the movie!

Dan Schwent I'm reading this right now. Your review is pretty much what I'm feeling.

Melki Phew! It's nice to have company when butting one's head against a wall of four and five star reviews.

message 7: by Dan (new)

Dan Schwent It's pretty uninteresting so far. Even the first murder was boring.

Susan I abandoned this one quickly....I'm happy not to be the only one who was unimpressed.

Seems as though we've got a growing anti-fan club.

Dan Schwent Since Patricia Highsmith has been dead for 20 years and not very likeable when she was alive, we should be safe.

HAHA!

I heard this is going to be made into a movie. I think Ben Affleck is involved in some way. I'll bet the movie will be better than the book. It's a shame. I felt this one had a lot of potential.

Ben Affleck AND Gillian Flynn. This might be pretty good.

Caroline Oh, that's right; it's those two. Yup. I predict great things!

David Schaafsma I predict everyone will want to see Hitchcock's film again. Ben Affleck and Gillian Flynn are not Hitchcock and Highsmith, in my mind. (Just finished reading Strangers and liked it more than you, though she should have cut it by a 1/3....)
