When I first read this book as a teenager I hated it, I thought it was so dry and impenetrable. I loved the Kubrick movie for its weirdness though. Clearly I was not one of the brighter kids of my generation. Having said that while I like it very...

Watching 2001 when older - and with some knowledge about it that I didn't have before - made me enjoy it more (but in a way I did so even at the first go). Reading this at some point - I have the one with the movie cover :)

It's a great complement to the movie 7jane, Clarke in general is pretty awesome, and his books are so short!

*nods* And the film doesn't really feel dates.
Of the other novels: I have two copies of Childhood's End (they don't have quite the same next, so it's two versions in a way) plus Rendezvous With Rama, which I haven't yet read. :)

just bought this one and will be reading in the next month or so. Story's really do take on a whole new meaning as you age.

This is a great novel that I haven't read since high schools. As you said, it clears up a lot of the mysteries of the film, while still delivering his sense of wonder. I'm going to listen to this on audiobook sometime this year. Looking forward to HAL9000 singing Daisy to David Bowman.

David Bowman also reminds me of David Bowie a little bit! :D

Yes, you nailed his mental state with the Major Tom moment!

Presumably you mean the book Denis, I have to agree with you there, it's pretty much perfect.

You make a strong case for revisiting this book that I read so long ago (but have watched many times).
The only trouble is, you've coined the best possible summary in your closing line.
As for "Clearly I was not one of the brighter kids of my generation" maybe you were just less precocious and pretentious? ;)

Well, I don't see the point in making weak cases, esp us none of my recs to you made any impact so far and my attempt to dissuade you from reading a certain book backfired ;)

Aww. I'm sure some of your recs have suited me well. It's just that I can't recall which. And anyway, your reviews and comments are among the most entertaining, so you win there. :)

Please note my usage of the word "us" in the previous comment, I think it's a pun, like "bonk". I'm the world's worst typist!

I noticed, but thought it unkind to point out a typo in public.

Thank you, Anuradha. It's the best in the series (didn't need to become a series really).
