Elyse Walters Hi Angela...thanks - and I had no idea what I was getting into. I simply bought this as a special one day. It's 'special' alright

Elyse Walters Thanks Natalie-I fell back to sleep after I wrote this. I need to read a few other reviews. :).

Elyse Walters Diane ...yes ....and beautiful Language!

Christy Great review! I have to get to this one. How I HATE what we do to women in the US - deny decent sex education and access to birth control, *combined* with a culture that tells them to be successful they must be sexually successful and "sex sells", etc.. No wonder our teen pregnancy rate if 4-5 times that of comparable European countries (with comprehensive sex ed and BC!) although they're no less sexually active. (Off soapbox. :-))

Andrea I'm glad you liked the audiobook--I ordered it when it was on special at Audible but haven't listened yet. Looking forward to it!

debra Great review, Elyse

message 12: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Brady Hmmm...will rethink it. I hate when two of my favorite friends disagree so thoroughly with a book. George says no; Elyse says yes; and I have yet to read it still.

message 13: by Elyse (new)

Elyse Walters Preach it Christy!!!!!!!!!
I agree!!!!!!

message 14: by Elyse (new)

Elyse Walters Nancy.....
Well, George read the book, which is a different experience than listening to the audiobook. I admit part of my enjoyment was not only the writing --- with the delivery in the speaking. I wonder if I would've felt a strong --- without the power of the audio-voice. To be - it brought a lot of power --- and I especially thought the voice fit so well to capture the young girl who the role was written for .

So I could definitely recommend the audiobook.

George - I love ya -- and respect you fully and I now have a pretty good idea as certain types of books that you just completely do not like ---
For example --- he can't stand Marianne Robinson ....
I haven't read her yet, but the majority of my women friends absolutely love her.
Nancy... I don't think you'll hate this book---
It's a bleak subject matter, but there is love and hope for this family at the same time.
Other thing I didn't mention, because I can't say for sure how much is true… But I've read much of the story is taken from true incidences from the authors life. Not sure if this comment helped or not. I love both you and George!!!!

debra Wouldn't you know that you said the audio was great, and can't seem to find audio version-which is the only format that works for me right now. Will keep looking. Great review!

Nancy Brady Elyse wrote: "Nancy.....

Well, not everyone likes the same books and maybe this one is one in which the audiobook is the medium. I hope the library has it in that form.

message 17: by Esil (new)

Esil Great review, Elyse. Maybe I'll try the audiobook for this one.

message 18: by Elyse (new)

Elyse Walters Nancy - good chance they do .... because it's been around a few years and also this book one awards, so your chances are pretty good.

message 19: by Elyse (new)

Elyse Walters Hi Esil... if you got this book when it was a daily special price -it was a nice deal. Maybe you can still find a special over the library--
I know you tend to like nonfiction books best when listening.....which I understand myself... put some fiction books work pretty well and I think you won't mind this one. The voice really is good.

message 20: by JanB (new)

JanB I'm always looking for a good audiobook but after reading your review I'm not sure I could stomach it...hmmm

message 21: by Alan (new)

Alan I'm reading this now and appreciate the great, clotted writing, but the action too is clotted and it's hard for me to get interested in the dog stuff. However I'm liking it enough to want to know what happens when Katrina arrives..

message 22: by Hosanna (new)

Hosanna I loved it on audio!

message 23: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Slater berard Agreed! The audio is amazing!!
