A friend of mine claims that there are parallels between Harry Potter and The picture of Dorian Gray. The initial character of Voldemord is very close to the believes of Dorian Grey. Both are trying to achieve immortality. What do you think? Btw if you are searching for a book about obsession and genius, I would recommend Das Schweigen des lichtes from Niel Flemming. Right at the moment only in german language.

I can see where they were coming from, but I would also have to say the 'Picture of Dorian Gary' has parallels with all of us. How the most common fear in the world is death, and how the picture grows more ugly and vile as Dorian commits more sin, i.e. murder. Him staying young and beautiful represents nothing but youth, his painting, on the other hand, I would have to argue represents the soul and concise. How we all might be beautiful on the outside but that has nothing to do with how we act and how we feel about something.
