Scent of Magic is actually written in a very interesting way, ensuring that Kerrick is present in this book even if he is not (sounds confusing, I know). I absolutely loved all the Avry-Kerrick interactions in ToP, so I was quite hesitant going into this book, but what I love about this series is that the romance is not the primary focus, and simply enhances the story. If romance is what you are purely seeking, however, then I suppose you might not have the best of luck with this one.
As someone who has some serious qualms with love triangles, I can tell you that I didn't find it to be a problem. In a way, I could see how some people would say that one is present, but it doesn't lead to the female protagonist becoming all fickle and indecisive (which is something I really loathe).
Personally, and this is just my opinion, I would say if you were invested in the characters in the first book, then give this a go.
