John Rhodes asked:
The book says that the manor house in Carriveau "had been bombed during the Great War and never rebuilt." Since Carriveau is somewhere in the Loire Valley, more or less near Tours (past Orleans on the way from Paris), how did the manor house possibly get bombed during the Great War? Am I the only history buff who found this questionable?
Ashley Yes. Tours hosted American troops in the second half of WWI, but that area did not see shelling. This, along with a number of other small anachronisms and sloppy research contributed to my dissatisfaction with this novel as whole.
