I just picked this up not realizing it was part of a series. Is it readable as a stand-alone or should I spring for the preceding novels first?

Juju I read out of order all the time, but this is the one series where I feel that reading in order will enhance the pleasure the reading that much.

Having said that, I don't think you need to read in order to enjoy it. It's just a matter of degrees in my opinion.(less)
