Does Garner 'adapt' the stories? Or is credit given to the sources? Or to the translators?

Sean There is an appendix giving the sources, and specifying the degree to which Garner modified the original material. The pieces he didn't rewrite are credited to the author. (That said, why he felt the need to change Lafcadio Hearn's version of Hoichi the Earless is beyond me.)
