Goodreads asked Alan Kleinberger:

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

Alan Kleinberger The sense of adventure and accomplishment. I outline and summarize my material in advance, and yet the words take me in unexpected directions. I reach a crossroads every few lines - "do I have this character do this or that?" Each decision changes the story's flow, sometimes fundamentally, sometimes in ways too subtle to see at first. And when it's all done and I reread what I've done, I'm often pleasantly shocked at what's there. The "I did THAT??" reaction is very gratifying, because it means that there's more going on than even I realize.
