What's the most off-the-wall thing you've done for the sake of book research?

Hmm -- so far, it's when I went hiking across the Kilaueia crater in Hawaii, while jetlagged and badly out of shape because it was February. That's a hefty hike, across GLASS-COVERED JAGGED GROUND THAT IS STILL HOT FROM AN ERUPTION DECADES AGO. I could've gotten really hurt. :) Don't do that. :)
But fortunately I was fine, and I even stopped to toast some spam sushi over a heat vent for a delicious geothermally-warmed lunch.

When you writing a novel, where do you start from? For instance, in the Inheritance trilogy, did you start by imagining the setting and then figuring out a story you could tell in it? Or did you start with the characters, and then you imagined the necessary setting for their story to be told? Or some other starting point? Or is this whole question too chicken-and-egg-y? Thanks

TW for sexual violence. I'm gonna get all serious and talk about trauma so please feel free not to answer if you'd prefer. Given that some of your readers are survivors of sexual violence, and the fact that rape is often used in novels as the tropey most-shocking-thing-ever, do you have guidelines/rules for when and how you write about sexual violence? I think you do it really skillfully.
