A Goodreads user asked A. Lynn Powers:

Was Medusa born in the Chinese year of the snake? If so, what would've happened if she'd been born in the year of the horse?

A. Lynn Powers What an interested question! You know, when I write YA stuff, I try to make it as "timeless" as possible (without using any dates) and only limited mention of things that might put a specific date into the story (though sometimes it's impossible without mentioning certain technologies and whatnot -- general dates are okay, like, I might mention smart phones, which at least tell you that it's taken place in the past decade or so). So.... I technically didn't write Medusa with any specific Chinese zodiac in mind. But now that you mentioned it, and now that I have looked up the characteristics of that sign, it does seem to fit her pretty well. And oddly enough, the horse is the sign that follows it! So it kind of makes sense that she is borderline snake/horse. The "horse" of Medusa's personality is, of course, a reference to "Pegasus" who was born from Medusa's blood. Don't worry! This isn't a spoiler to the story at all! :)
I hope O.o
