Jason Howell asked David Khalaf:

Hey David. This a question I'm asking of several writers, some friends, some strangers... If you were your own life-coach, and had to come up with a patch that would improve one area of your life (your writing or personal life) for 2016, what area would that be, and what would you tell yourself to do differently? What adjustments would you suggest? *Only off-limits subject: time-management. Thanks!

David Khalaf Hi Jason, thanks for the question. I think the one piece of advice I would carry into the new year is to BE AUTHENTIC -- both in my writing and in my life. Good writing starts with authentic characters, people we can believe and relate to. These characters may do extraordinary things, but they are rooted in an authenticity that touches something universal.

It's a good mantra to carry into my personal life as well. As much as I want to impress others and put my best foot forward, what people really want is someone authentic. When people see my wounds, my flaws, and my scars, they can better relate to me. They can trust me more because they can see that I'm not putting up a perfect facade.

My need for perfection, both in writing and in life, is my biggest challenge to being authentic. My goal for the coming year is to strive to be more imperfect.
