Stacey asked Joshilyn Jackson:

Hi Joshilyn! I love, love, love your stuff! What I would like to know is this: Where did the game, "What Have I Got in my Pocketses?" come from? How did you devise it? Thanks, your Yankee friend in Pennsylvania, Stacey Shannon

Joshilyn Jackson Hey Stacey --- Thanks!

The name came from The Hobbit. Gollum and Bilbo play a riddle game, and at the end Bilbo gets discombobulated and asks, simply, "What have I got in my pocket?" Golem says, "What has it got in its pocketses?" and says this is cheating, and insists on 3 guesses. SO I had the idea of starting with a secret in your pocket, and making another player guess there way to that secret, backwards. Of course, Lena has so many secrets in her pocketses that if she walked into a lake she would sink like a stone.

I made up the game when when my husband and I were newlyweeds and living in Chicago. Visiting home meant a 12 hour car ride; we were in grad school and way too poor to fly! We played ALL the car games in gods in Alabama on those trips, long before I ever wrote the book.
