Margaret Schwind None of the narrative takes place in Europe. The 1915 part is set in Aleppo, Syria; it takes place shortly after the mass deportations began of ethnic Armenians living in Ottoman Turkey to the Deir ez-Zor and Ras al-Ayn detention camps. Some of the action moves to Gallipoli, also in Turkey, and Egypt, which is where the casualties of the British Expeditionary Force were evacuated following the disastrous Gallipoli campaign.
Kathy Armenia, which at the time was a part of the Ottoman Empire. Later it was taken over by the USSR, but now is an independent country. Some of the story takes place in the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey, Syria, and Eqypt as well.
