I wouldn't recommend it as part of the pleasure of the series is understanding the nuances of the characters' behaviors. There's lots of political intrigue that you'd miss by not at least reading the first book.

Could be read as stand-alone, but I highly recommend starting with book 1 and follow the series order.

You can easily figure out what's going on without sequential reading. The author doesn't constantly repeat the past history of the series...who's who, etc. ,and that's a good thing, but be bold. Having said that..why not read in order?????
