Hi Jen, that's difficult to say. It really varies depending on the story. However, I am of the opinion that a strong back story creates a strong character. I like them all to have deep emotions which usually come from emotional experiences. I try to carry warnings in the books so readers are prepared. My current book, Unwanted Girl, deals with themes of Female Gendercide.
