Robert Lindow asked:

anti-lock brakes? threats to our safety... how?

Ron I agree with your question. I have used anti-lock brakes a number of times to save myself from a crash. The danger was caused by others, like a road construction that merged two freeway on ramps into one with no signs and from opposite directions. Safety devices like seat belts, AL brakes, helmets, etc are life savers.
Dscotthep The argument goes like this: when people know they have ABS (or helmets, or seatbelts, etc.) there to save their bacon when things go south, they will drive (or otherwise behave) more carelessly because they "know" that said safety device will cover for them. This is not universally true of course, but very true among certain segments of the population (depending on the device).

For those people who behave more carelessly (especially those who do so unconsciously) because they believe the safety device will always save them, then it's true that the safety device has become a threat to their safety. When you're dealing with automobiles, they become a threat to *your* safety too.
