This one does have bad language and adult themes, like Greg said, you can try Racing in the Rain, though, it's been rewritten for children.

I would say it is appropriate for a mature 12 year old; some bad language and a couple of adult themes (e.g. rape) but nothing violent, and overall an uplifting story. The adult situations are not explained in graphic detail.
