John I could PROBABLY try to answer this within the context of the book like this:

3d printers are excellent at printing solid materials from relatively simple molecules, say metals, or polymers. But going from carbon to proteins, sugars, fats is orders of magnitude harder.

Then again we can make artificial meat *now*, so presumably a civilisation that has the capability to bring into orbit and then launch the mass needed for that ship should have advanced as much but...

Look the science of the book is retarded to say the least. They couldn't think to send a damn rat onto aurora before going themselves.

Charlie oh good, i'm not the only one who thought about the rat thing. they even mention lab rats several times. wtf.
