I have a question (SPOILERS WARNING!) that it's bothering me so much. How could Esther, or Sylvia for all that matters, get out of depression just with electroshock therapy? She described that she felt that, after electroshock therapy, the "bell jar" that isolated her had lifted somehow for a bit. How can electrotherapy make that without any kind of psychological therapy?! What do you think?

Electric shock therapy is/was an effective treatment for serious depression. It does wipe out some memories but seems to correct the chemical imbalance which causes depression in some people.
