It’s the notion that a momentary lapse in judgment can reap havoc in one’s life. This is the case with the protagonist, Frederick Starks. He confronted his wife’s lover and the confrontation was supposed to be a verbal one. His main goal was to embarrass the man in front of his wife. He wanted to shame him; unfortunately, it turned into a physical altercation. A man admired and respected by many is now in prison. His only option is to survive. He has to endure the emotional torture of his wife’s betrayal, and the emotional demons from the past. I should also say that Starks is not one of innocence; he does make mistakes―lots of them.
