This answer contains spoilers… (view spoiler)[Well, when a bidimensional surface is reduced to a one-dimensional curve the curve is of infinite length... See for example the Peano curve on Wikipedia. By that point the book is very firmly in hard fantasy territory and any pretence of science-fiction is long gone. The shrinkage is probably just the reversing of the growth to huge size, but as I said, at that point in the book anything goes. (hide spoiler)]
