I think this is a great book to give children of age ten or so and up, as it does not promote any of the negative behaviors and only shows them somewhat indirectly. More importantly, it shows that the best way to handle these situations is to talk about them with trusted adults rather than try to bottle in your fears and emotions. It also reminds kids that problems in their families are not their fault.

I would say that this is NOT appropriate for pre-teens. It has undertones (very obvious ones) of underage drinking and smoking (cigarettes or otherwise).
Reading level is low because it is a graphic novel, but themes and plot are not appropriate for a young audience.

I would say it depends on the kids age and whether an adult will be available to answer questions about the story line.
