Well, the basic plot is indeed quite similar to Strugatsky brothers' Definitely Maybe, with the difference that the Russian novel is (if I remember correctly) quite pessimistic, as a good Russian novel should be, whereas the Chinese approach is (a little) more optimistic; and of course, the adversary is not the universe itself but rather an actual (or at least potential) enemy and their minions.
