Goodreads asked Robert Hill:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Robert Hill The idea behind "One Second Before Awakening" came to me many, many years ago. It was a trivial thing that triggered it. I was watching a television commercial about a product that I cannot even remember what it was about, but in the commercial a woman stepped out of a painting hanging on a wall, and entered the real world. This set off a thought process where I posed the question: What if someone entered a painting and explored the world within it? And then I extrapolated from there: What if the painting had been created by an artist that had been well-known for depicting surreal or fantastic images? I immediately thought of Salvador Dali, perhaps the single greatest surrealist painter, and clearly one of the four great 20th century artistic masters.
