Boris The crazyness of the mothers in this book is mainly a result from the abusive relationships with their husbands (and vice versa). What Franzen is exploring is the traumatic experience of those relationships and the way it reflects on the children. He highlights the context of time for the parents and for the children - the parents who lived in time where political power defined the collective memory and the children who live in time where internet does that. It's a great story IMO and the characters of the fathers and mother in it is just a tool for Franzen to illustrate his point. I doubt it hints for any kind of perception the author holds toward men and women IRL.
